I saw "Laura" for $7.50 at Wal-Mart. I was about to buy it but wanted to ask- Is there any rumors about a Criterion version?

None that I can think of and honestly, the Fox disc is outstanding. There's always room for improvement but they did a great job with the transfer and the supplements (the Vincent Price bio is particularly good).

It's a steal as seven bucks and change.

I was just making sure I hadn't missed anything. Due diligence before buying.

You could use it as a mantelpiece ornament.

I see on Reddit where its saying the sale will be from 11/2 to 12/3.

https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/c..._from_112_123/

If that's true, I will have to revise my December ordering

I feel you, garage poet. I’m beginning an assault on my unwatched stack of Criterion’s this morning before I go to the gym. I need to knock out a good portion of them...so I can buy more during the sale this month!

Up first, a film I am completely embarrassed to admit I have never seen being a huge fan of George Cukor, Kate Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart The Philadelphia Story. I was going to see it when TCM had it playing in theaters recently, but got sick.

I will be very surprised, based on reputation, and the talent involved, if this doesn’t vault to the top of my all-time favorite films list, alongside Casablanca and Double Indemnity.

Just a question in relation to the regular B&N Criterion sales. Do they include pre-orders that fall between the dates of the sale i.e. The Bergman Boxset?

I believe any title released during the sale period will be discounted (I don’t think pre-orders made during the sale period will count).

All titles released before the end date of the sale are normally marked 50% off from the beginning of the sale so you don't have to wait until release to get the discount.

Preorder after the end date are almost never discounted online. After the sale starts, someone will likely report IF the Dec/Jan releases are 50% off from the store system. Sometimes they are, sometimes not. If they are, then you can make a pre-paid "Ship to Home" order generated from the store at that 50% off price. Since this is considered a store purchase and not online, it also allows your member 10% to apply. Just ask the store clerks to check their system prices since apparently the customer kiosk computers in most places are now gone (I got 'talked to' last time for using an open computer which had previously been a customer computer and I didn't notice it now had a Employee Only label on the side -- luckily the clerk knew me from many previous sales so it was a friendly talk).

Very YMMV though -- last NOV, the Dec titles were discounted though not Jan, in July sale the August title weren't though the Sept titles were (even stranger than usual).

Been waiting to the end of the year to start my subscription, but this is way sad news for lots of my film brethren.

Though for added measure I just signed up for the 30 day trial. I'm going spend November exploring this thing.

I'm not, really. I'm moving some stuff from the top of my Blu-ray shelves (for instance, a globe) and placing it up there. It will look nice up there, on top where it should be.

Didn't they add the Warner library and launch in the UK mere months ago?

FilmStruck shutting down is massively shocking.

But does that mean we could see these Criterions end up on another service again? They were on Hulu forever before FilmStruck came along.

Email from Criterion on Filmstruck's demise:

Quote:
News About FilmStruck
We have some sad news to share: earlier this morning, Turner and Warner Bros. Digital Networks announced plans to shut down FilmStruck, the streaming service that has been our happy home for the last two years. Like many of you, we are disappointed by this decision. When we launched the Criterion Channel in 2016, we had two goals: to ensure that our entire streaming library remained available, and to address our audience in our own voice. We’re proud of the work we’ve done, bringing curated programming and the full range of supplemental features to the streaming space, championing a diverse array of filmmakers from beyond our collection and creating original content that invites you into exciting conversations about cinema culture.

All this is very new, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more details. But rest assured that we are still committed to restoring and preserving the best of world cinema and bringing it to you in any medium we can. In the weeks ahead, we’ll keep you informed about the great programming you can watch on the Channel before it shuts down on November 29, and we’ll be trying to find ways we can bring our library and original content back to the digital space as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone who enjoyed FilmStruck, and we hope you’ll join us as we look forward to what the future brings.

With the future of physical slowly declining Criterion really needs a successful streaming service. Hopefully they can go back to Hulu or find some other service to stream their content. Definitely sad news.

This is the #1 reason why I still buy physical copies of movies. You can never rely on something being in any streaming or cloud-based platform forever...
