I just finished watching 2001 on 4K Blu-ray, and any doubts I had about the release have been erased. I have seen 2001 dozens of times in the theater beginning with its Cinerama debut in 1968 (including several instances where I sat through all four showings of the movie in an afternoon), and of course many, many times on home video since 1980 on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, and BD. My first viewing of the movie when I was 12 was a life-changing experience, and 2001 easily remains my favorite movie.
My greatest concern for the 4K version was how the color would look, as I had an initial bad reaction upon seeing the trailer for the restoration from about a half year ago. It is with great relief that I can say the color is as good (and in some instances better) than any other viewing that I can remember. Yes, some of the blacks of space are not as black as the letterbox bars (and some are), and there are some soft-focus scenes (for example, the distance shot of the photographer assembling the scientists for a photo in front of the monolith at the crater Tycho), but the vast majority of the movie is presented in unrivaled clarity and detail. The soundtrack is the clearest and certainly the most extended in bass frequency of any home version of the movie that I own. There were several scenes where I saw details that were previously unnoticed, which I did not think was possible. 2001 is looking and sounding great, 50 years later. I cannot comment on the HDR quality, as my 4K TV (84" LG 9800 series) is pre-HDR, so that gives me something else to look forward to. I will not go into a detailed analysis of the individual scenes (and I think I can correctly assume that nobody would care anyway) but my lasting memory of today's viewing will be the frequent smile I had while watching the 4K restoration - now my reference version - of 2001. |

Definitely. Done in a dark basement at night. This is a bit embaressing... I forgot how it opened... i.e. the soundtrack playing against a black opening. When it started I couldn't make out my screen AT ALL. The LG is set into a cabinet with several inches of dead space on the sides, and above, and it all just looked like a jet-black "hole". I couldn't see the cabinet, the screen, the bars, nothing. I was thinking that I had a technical issue, and then it finally dawned on me (no pun intended), that this was the original opening. And, re: DV, I've left it enabled in my OPPO since the firmware update, so I'm always using it now, but always (still) scanning any new content for hints of problems.

Watched it through yesterday in 4K on an Oppo UDP-203. Mine froze for a few seconds too, but somewhat earlier. Watched it again today with the commentary and all played fine. Not sure what to make of it. But yes, the HDR 4K looks wonderful. I've bought 2001 many times over by now, and this is head and shoulders above any version I've ever seen. I saw it in the theater when it came out, but can't easily compare back then to this now, but this was great.

I have to ask the dumb question, as I did not pre-order, does anyone have this in stock to ship (non-ebay scalp prices) or is the waiting game in order. I saw Fry's had this in their ad, but their site says sold out. do they have it in store maybe? I know no BB stores have them, but maybe someone else does???

Well it seems like WB screwed up this release by putting an orange filter over the shot of the corridor. Hopefully for The Shining 4K they will actually use the set photos as reference and present the film as black and white like it's supposed to be

See these production stills, doesn't get more white than that: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=5577 And does a single red/pink color corridor make any sense when the rest of the ship's wallpanels are white? Pink wallpanels aren't very sci-fi. It was definitely intentionally changed for the new master, and I don't mind that they did. |

There were several instances in the film where people reached to there pocket for a Pen. It could easily have been to reach for a handkerchief since he had just put down a wet glass. Was a single cigarette being smoked or held, a cigarette in view, an ashtray, a cigar, or a pack of smokes seen anywhere in the movie? On a space station, do you think they'd allow smoking -- less for fire hazard as dirty/mucking up the station and electronics. Kubrick was a known very/extremely heavy smoker so this seems to be a very specific choice to make in 1968 either about the film or possibly a comment about the year 2001 |

There are lumance/chroma errors on the standard Blu-ray.
Here are some examples in this shot. The PanAm shuttle clearly has issues and manifests as cyan breakup, similar to what can be seen on the Matrix UHD, and the struts on the the space station. ![]() |

The corridor was white on the LaserDisc The corridor was white on the DVD The corridor was white on the HDNet Movies HDTV broadcast The corridor was white on the original Blu-ray If it was red-tinted on the 1968 prints, then I'm glad they finally got the home video version right after 30 years of releases. Corridor had a dirty heavy yellow tint in two separate original 70mm prints I saw in the past three years. Home video got it wrong. Until now.
