I watched this once a really long time ago, but not when it came out. and I remember not hating it. which isn't a ringing endorsement, but I'm sure this move is hated on by a lot of people who never even bothered to see it.

I watched it on television a couple of years ago for the first time since seeing it on VHS and it's a lot of fun. A solid action adventure movie. Never understood why it gets so much grief.

The most legitimate reason to "hate" this film is because it so closely resembles Casablanca, but as long as you know that going in, it's certainly fun otherwise, particularly if you have no expectations. The supporting cast is made up of pretty solid actors, which helps the film immensely, as does the use of practical effects and set design on a modest budget. It's also far and away Pam's most accomplished film, as both Snapdragon (1993) and Raw Justice (1994) are terrible, if I recall correctly, and I don't even remember Naked Souls (1996).

Speaking of Pam, I had a huge thing for her back in the day, and while her taste in men is...questionable, to put it mildly, she always seemed like a sweet person, who, like a lot of Playboy models (and indeed, beautiful women), struggled to be appreciated for something other than her exceptional physical appearance.

Given that the current HD master is dated and apparently the film elements for the unrated footage were destroyed, I have to admit that I was hoping Shout! would take this on to get some new extras, if not a new scan. I'd be really curious to hear from Pam, David Hogan, or even just a couple of the cast and crew about making the film, the impact it had on their careers, and what they think of the film now. Sadly, I guess that's not going to happen.

Saying it’s a lot of fun is the best way to summarize Barb Wire to me. It doesn’t pretend to be anything but and it certainly delivers.

I remember reading somewhere that they wanted to go even more over the top with the sex and rock & roll but they studio chickened out. A cross between Barbarella and Heavy Metal. I wish they’d made that movie but the final product is very decent. I think Pam was so big back then that people just wanted it to fail and watch her fall.

Is this the German blu-ray you're talking about?

It looks like it just came out last week. I'd be interested if it is indeed the unrated cut (regardless of lo-res).

It is. There was an identical Futurepak release before that.

Yep. I have the steelbook version of it but I'm assuming the disc is the same. This cover is pretty badass.

I remember turning it off after my teenage self got what I wanted from this one: her first nude scene in the movie (I assume there are multiple). Hard pass on this one.

Put a tentative pre-order in for this Mill Creek disc.

I'll cancel is it turns out it's not the unrated cut.

Again. I really want to warn people about that "unrated" cut... it really turns an already super cool intro scene into a draggy music video. I think what they should do is really keep the theatrical cut but include the 7min strip tease extra so people who want more of that can check it. Honestly... even that is a drag and I even thought so as a 14yo boy when the movie came out.

What with a new scan being unlikely, the merits of the uncut version debatable--especially given the excessive sharpening of the german release--the affordable, existing US disc would seem to be the way to go, eh?

No. I always wondered about the comics though cuz the 1990s was a weird period for comic book films. Shit. Never even read Tank Girl either.

So far that's my conclusion, sadly. And I own both.
There's also the old German bluray which is the same the old US bluray except for an additional low-res promotional featurette from back then that's not really worth it either but at least it's some kind of bonus feature.

Going to assume this will be just like the Uni disc then?

Can't find any info but I guess I'll keep my preorder no matter what. Fun movie.
