I don't think anyone specific can be blamed for it really. Those of us who were basically born into it, handed this technology and all its possibilities in childhood grew up thinking of it as the norm. You can't fault kids for adjusting to something they're given easy and constant access to. And it's not like the older generations chose it, either. The record labels, movie studios, musicians, filmmakers, etc. negatively affected by it would rather have done without it as well, I'd think (and I feel especially bad for the artists, who were already getting screwed over by the corporations before this - this has made it worse). Some musicians were very optimistic about it to begin with, but have changed their tune in recent years after realizing it didn't lead to people using illegal filesharing as a way of "sampling" the work, then paying if they enjoyed it. It created a sense of entitlement to be able to consume media for free, and I think that should have been obvious. Again, later generations born into this are going to have a completely different perspective vs. those who first adjusted to buying physical media before the internet and illegal filesharing went mainstream. It's more a case of technological advancement kind of passing us all by, getting out of hand and too little being done about it too late. Again, I feel regretful; I wish they'd done more to fight it as soon as it started. No doubt this has contributed to the current decline of physical media in a big way, and I just don't feel good about where we're headed vs. what could have been. |

I think we're past the point of no return now and the corporations have resorted to getting what they can from subscriptions and other convenience fees with movies, shows, music and even video games. "Pay us to make it easier to watch" or "pay us to add a hat to your free character" and whatnot. The future will only be more and more focused on that kind of thing. |

All we can do, if we care, is to keep buying physical media. Do our best to at least keep it alive as a niche collector's market for a few more decades, and hope our numbers are large enough to count, heh. I'm kind of worried that Generation Y aka Millennials will be the last ones buying physical media to any significant(ish) extent, only because we have a connection to it from childhood. I know some others who, like me, have had a change of heart after doing a lot of illegal downloading in younger years. But will Gen Z, and especially the generations that follow Z, even bother? It will be such a different world for them. Last edited by MechaGodzilla; 12-18-2018 at 04:40 AM. |

Physical media began declining when VHS players came on the market and people started recording their own shows and movies. The writing has been on the wall for a long time and little was done even then. With the inherit lack of understanding and not doing much about it in the beginning, this became a monster too big to handle. Until an unbreakable encryption comes along, until recording films with a phone is stopped, until it's impossible to record and download a film or show from the TV...well, you get the idea. It's not going away. |

If they DRM'd disc movies to any significant extent it would destroy the purpose anyway and you might as well stream/download. Also there ain't been a DRM invented yet which isn't breakable eventually. That's why I say the only thing that would do anything is true government intervention, which in the U.S. would be almost impossible for a multitude of reasons (which is why they're not even trying).

VHS actually was a HUGE boon for the industry, at first they fought taping of shows, but lost and later found they did far better for it in every way and rentals and later VHS sales brought in oodles of money Quote:
Some of the DRM is utterly stupid too, they spent tons of money developing Protected Audio Path to fix a problem that caused zero piracy and people trying to get around it so they could play stuff back at full audio quality without having to toss all their $$$ equipment probably lead some into piracy. And with music it lead to disasters where some company went under and then files became locked and all the stuff people paid for turned to junk. People have also been burned by that in the video game world. |

I don't think we have too much to worry about though. We'll keep doing us and I think physical media will be around for a very long time to come despite all the naysayers. |
