This definitely looks like a nice pick up. Any word when this might go pre-order?

As someone who's part of one of those generations, I've become increasingly mournful that things went down as they did over the last 20+ years.

I don't think anyone specific can be blamed for it really. Those of us who were basically born into it, handed this technology and all its possibilities in childhood grew up thinking of it as the norm. You can't fault kids for adjusting to something they're given easy and constant access to.

And it's not like the older generations chose it, either. The record labels, movie studios, musicians, filmmakers, etc. negatively affected by it would rather have done without it as well, I'd think (and I feel especially bad for the artists, who were already getting screwed over by the corporations before this - this has made it worse). Some musicians were very optimistic about it to begin with, but have changed their tune in recent years after realizing it didn't lead to people using illegal filesharing as a way of "sampling" the work, then paying if they enjoyed it. It created a sense of entitlement to be able to consume media for free, and I think that should have been obvious. Again, later generations born into this are going to have a completely different perspective vs. those who first adjusted to buying physical media before the internet and illegal filesharing went mainstream.

It's more a case of technological advancement kind of passing us all by, getting out of hand and too little being done about it too late. Again, I feel regretful; I wish they'd done more to fight it as soon as it started. No doubt this has contributed to the current decline of physical media in a big way, and I just don't feel good about where we're headed vs. what could have been.

Even when artists tried saying "hey this could be bad" they were mocked by society at large for being whiners, like Metallica. At the end of the day people don't care and will do what benefits them when there's little chance of being punished. The only thing that could change it is a real government crackdown and control effort, which they seem to have zero interest in doing for likely good reasons (legal challenges, protests, etc.).

I think we're past the point of no return now and the corporations have resorted to getting what they can from subscriptions and other convenience fees with movies, shows, music and even video games. "Pay us to make it easier to watch" or "pay us to add a hat to your free character" and whatnot. The future will only be more and more focused on that kind of thing.

Don't forget releasing games piecemeal. A new trend I hate!

All we can do, if we care, is to keep buying physical media. Do our best to at least keep it alive as a niche collector's market for a few more decades, and hope our numbers are large enough to count, heh.

I'm kind of worried that Generation Y aka Millennials will be the last ones buying physical media to any significant(ish) extent, only because we have a connection to it from childhood. I know some others who, like me, have had a change of heart after doing a lot of illegal downloading in younger years. But will Gen Z, and especially the generations that follow Z, even bother? It will be such a different world for them.

The problem is that no one could've foreseen what direction this new technology would take or how it would evolve. It's a little hard to get a handle on when you don't even understand it. The recent hearings about Facebook and Google were a complete joke and the some of the senators didn't have the first clue how search engines even work.

Physical media began declining when VHS players came on the market and people started recording their own shows and movies. The writing has been on the wall for a long time and little was done even then.

With the inherit lack of understanding and not doing much about it in the beginning, this became a monster too big to handle.

Until an unbreakable encryption comes along, until recording films with a phone is stopped, until it's impossible to record and download a film or show from the TV...well, you get the idea. It's not going away.

If they DRM'd disc movies to any significant extent it would destroy the purpose anyway and you might as well stream/download. Also there ain't been a DRM invented yet which isn't breakable eventually. That's why I say the only thing that would do anything is true government intervention, which in the U.S. would be almost impossible for a multitude of reasons (which is why they're not even trying).

my local theater had a double header a while back where they showed the first episode of Cobrai Kai and then Karate Kid. They had it on a nice big 55' screen and the 400 person auditorium was jam packed. There were a LOT of never mind under 40s or under 30s but under 18s and it looked like under 14s in the audience too.

people were pumped for both and everyone was saying Cobrai Kai was better than they had ever possibly hoped for

? what physical media was there before VHS? nobody released 35mm or 16mm for the home and the very few times they released 8mm it was just a few minutes of a film, special clips (although people were crazy happy to get those few minutes since that was all you could get)

VHS actually was a HUGE boon for the industry, at first they fought taping of shows, but lost and later found they did far better for it in every way and rentals and later VHS sales brought in oodles of money

DRM that is too strong though also hinders things, not being able to play stuff the way you want on what you want hurts sales too and it tends to really drive away the super serious person who does pay for stuff. I know that I bought virtually zero UHD until it got somewhat cracked and if they ever manage to uncrack, well that will be the day I stop buying UHD. Seriously I had spent maybe $40 on UHD until the recent cracks and now since then well.... Fort Knox doesn't contain as much as I feel like I've spent.

Some of the DRM is utterly stupid too, they spent tons of money developing Protected Audio Path to fix a problem that caused zero piracy and people trying to get around it so they could play stuff back at full audio quality without having to toss all their $$$ equipment probably lead some into piracy.

And with music it lead to disasters where some company went under and then files became locked and all the stuff people paid for turned to junk. People have also been burned by that in the video game world.

Great list as it confirms Panic Room.

But Back to School? Is that the Rodger Dangerfield one from mid 80s? Not one I’d have placed high on the required list for UHD. But all are welcome.

Yep, agree with you here. All we can do is keep supporting physical media and hopefully we will maintain our niche for years to come. It is unfortunate that so many people don't understand the benefits or the social responsibility portion of it all. Then again, other people are the ones coming over to MY house for football Sundays, 4K screenings, video games, and similar tech demos. Gen Z makes me really sad when it comes to all of this stuff, as well as social networking and their associated screen time, and their lack of meaningful relationships.

I don't think we have too much to worry about though. We'll keep doing us and I think physical media will be around for a very long time to come despite all the naysayers.
