I have the same issue in my office...

The scene in the woods by the cabin is a good example. Trees and plants look somewhat blurry on UHD just like the would in real life

But trees and plants look sharp in the real world, if viewing them with proper vision.

Oh god. Stop with repeating that the real world isn’t that sharp. If items are sharp on the 1080p Blu Ray that aren’t on the uhd then it is a mastering error. You saying the same stuff over and over again doesn’t make it true, you are just spewing untruths.

Keep dismissing Apple TV as well. I just purchased Hunter killer an Apple TV in 4K DV and it rivals any uhd disc I own (about 80). Sound quality is top tier as well. Don’t even compare Apple 4K to Netflix. Pretty crappy comparison.

Seriously are you the technician that screwed up the encode? Your unrelenting defense of the indefensible is borderline narcissistic. And yes seriously the weave on the seatbelt. Fine details matter in home theater. If they didn’t maybe we should all go back to dvd. Heck why not vhs for that matter? You have some strange bias that doesn’t make any sense.

It’s a free country rocky. You can prefer whatever version you like. What doesn’t make sense to anyone on this discussion is your strange stance that there is no encoding issue.

The Blu is visibly sharpened throughout, the UHD is not.

So I just bought this on 4k, because I found it for really cheap, did I make a mistake?

No, the UHD looks overall quite lovely in respects to colors and HDR, especially if you are not comparing it to the Blu-ray transfer, however it is a bit soft.

The Blu-ray has been sharpened a bit and the UHD transfer has been filtered a bit. Although the BR has been sharpened it is not distracting and it does actually have more finer detail that is native to the source and not due to the sharpening.

Both transfers do look nice in spite of their respective trade-offs.

I cannot speak to the qualities of the Itunes 4K DV version.

So ee caused detail to appear in the Blu Ray that already wasn’t there on film? Didn’t think it was possible to do that.

At least on my OLED the Dolby vision version is the overall winner.

to me it's a win , win. The blu ray is great..the UHD is great. Whichever you prefer or own, it's a terrific presentation. I have the blu ray steel book, the 4K uhd set, and the 2lp clear vinyl set of the soundtrack and yet I wasn't crazy about it when I saw it in the theater...it's one of those that I enjoyed more the 2nd time around at home.

Same here, I didn't like it at all first time around as I telegraphed the twist waaaaaaaaaaay too early. Second time around liked it a LOT more, mainly for the visuals and the music but also for the ginger ninja.

Why are you quoting me? I said nothing of the sort, nor was I talking about EE.

I liked the UHD version better than the Blu Ray because of the better color palette and how sharp do we want it? Ginsu knives sharp or real world sharp haha?

You had said it was visibly sharpened. That’s usually is in reference to edge enhancement isn’t it? Whether or not it has some slight edge enhancement or not ee doesn’t magically add detail. It just falsely makes the existing detail look sharper than it really is. Uhd version has less detail than a 1080p version. Ee or not.

If you have a Oppo the UHD works great with Geoffs tip, sharpness +2 to more match the blu.

He did like a 400% zoom in on the BD and found some minor edge-enhancement, and has been saying every since that's the difference between the UHD and BD. It's not though, the UHD obviously lacks real detail the BD has.

Also some might prefer the cooler color temp of the BD. Geoff's "Ginger Ninja" looks a little better with porcelain skin on the BD IMO.
