If that is truly their policy it is a terrible one and rife for abuse. If a merchant wants to verify signature to protect themselves, I do not see what the big deal is. I would happily show my ID to verify it's truly me making the transaction, but I've maybe been asked three times in years of credit card purchases.

I just can't understand why some people huff and puff when they're asked to verify who they are at the point of purchase, then later on, when they're the victims of credit card fraud, bemoan how easy it is for thieves to rack up cc purchases.

And to the OP, do you know what the consumers are saying when they file their disputes? I've known some cc companies to be very aggressive when it comes to dispute claims.

Nah, main office just tells us that there's a dispute, look for the receipt in our file folder and then fax it.

Aslong as their signature on the receipt matches the one on the card, it should be all good. I used to work with this type of stuff. charge backs left and right. My company once had 15 charge backs from one person alone. All had the same signature and it matched what the credit card company had in its database. After we sent the receipts back to the main office, it turned out the person thought he had used a different card..lol... i'm pretty sure you can fight it back..
