Samsung shot themselves in the foot to begin with when they've said they're not supporting Dolby Vision but instead support a HDR format that will likely be a failure in a couple of years from now. I'm not surprised by a bit Samsung is giving up on 4K Blu-ray players.

Well, I'm not jumping on to 8K. If 4K dies, back to 1080p for me (unless that were to die off as well, then digital downloads it is).

If it were to make glasses-free 3D a reality, I'd want it, but that's just lil' 'ol me.

Where, please? And I hope that you don't mean VR that still involves me wearing something on my melon. My melon needs to be free!

"Currently, all 3D viewing that is in use and available for the home or the cinema has to be done by wearing 3D glasses."

"video projectors still offer 3D viewing capability as they are used in both home and professional settings — however, that still requires viewing using glasses."

I haven't heard Samsung mentioned in discussions about quality players since I can't remember when.
I don't recall them ever making an Oppo build quality like player. Some of their first Blu-ray players were built well and heavy but nothing spectacular. Most of their players are pretty much all plastic. I was just naming 2 Samsung disc players that I personally like or think are just ok.

I have it in storage but I do recall it being pretty noisy.

I thought the point of the Samsung 8K TV is that it upscales 4K and most content to 8K. I don't think I will be buying any Samsung video and audio products though with this news. I will wait for Sony and LG to do one.

Prototypes do exist, but I can't afford them and I have no access to them if I could. Again, my hopes are raised only to be dashed against the rocks!

For me, only if the option for 3D with glasses exists. So far, glasses-free can't recreate the screen extensions that 3D is known for. Or the immersion. Just depth and better viewing angles. At least as far as the 2 demos I've seen are concerned.

5.3% market share is a little momentum? That's lower than 3D had at its height. (And in an unrelated note: saw Alita in IMAX 3D. A must!)

Honestly the only downside I see from this is that the 4K player market will get a little less competitive. I'm not gonna miss their products, that's for sure.

Sony does, they have a wireless one, with a USB port to stream and digitize your precious analog music collection.

I never rated the first Samsung 4k player anyway. Plus I have an issue than I can’t fix on my Samsung 4k tv. One of the hdmi sockets is defunk and doesn’t work. Samsung won’t fix it. Plus whatever they told me to do over the phone didn’t bloody work.

When the whole thing gives up the ghost (hopefully not for a good while) I’m not buying another Samsung tv again. I’m done with Samsung. I’ll look to Sony or Panasonic.

John, some folks need to take a course on humor; they grab everything as if the world was ending. Of course with collections of over 20,000 physical discs it's going to take quite some time before the world ends. Samsung with their 8K TV offerings are simply following a trend that can take 8 years before holding some serious investments.
The technology is simply more advanced than the people ready for it.

If Samsung just quit on 4K BR players it must mean they don't make money with them because they don't support Dolby Vision and most likely never will. If you don't support what the market wants you to support might as well go the way of the dodo.
It's the same with 4K versus 3D.
