A lot of content still languishes there. In many cases, it is the only option.

Plus, my buying a DVD has the uncanny ability to cause a blu-ray announcement to appear shortly afterwards.

Does DVD get a sale credit if its included in a Blu-ray case? Or are there really that many people buying just DVD?

Oppo left the *home entertainment* category entirely. They didn't have a huge range of products in the West and it's fair to say they were best known for their disc players.

They stopped selling their headphones and headphone DACs as well.

Less expensive. Walmart pushes DVD over Blu-Ray because it fits their primary economic demographic - families - and they link their HD VOD service to many of the DVDs they carry as "exclusives". They used to have bins for Blu-Ray and DVD overstock, but now only offer DVD bins. Target pushes Blu-Ray and DVD, but does not emphasize one or the other.

DVD outsells Blu-Ray by a huge margin. Never underestimate the "save some cheese" mentality and the fact that Blu-Ray players never caught on in vehicles - except as ultra-expensive add-ons for mini-van/SUVs - pretty much means that family purchasers will pick DVD over Blu.

People still don't realize buying DVDs these days is a scam?

DVD still sells, specially if you have good blu ray player that is able to convert the data from it to 1080p24fps for a 50inch tv and below. I recently got an old Sony BDP-BPX59, that does a great job on making DVD's look almost HD. For me, that saves me some cash, and I just get the DVD. Though ,when I see it doesn't have any special features, I go for the blu-ray/dvd combo.

Their players were always junk. Would never buy one.

Samsung 4K players I could care less. We live in the era of Panasonic 4K players (9000 & 820) now, and Sony (X800M2)...fine tuned by Hollywood video experts.

Samsung never supported SACD and DVD-Audio and HDCD and MQA.
Sony and Pioneer support some of those, plus Dolby Vision.

Samsung never supported XLR balanced connections on their players.
Panasonic does (9000).

Few years from now videophiles looking to upgrade their TVs and BR players are going to inquire about 8K, from the likes of Sony, Panasonic, LG and Pioneer. ...Say 2, 3, 4, 5 years from today...February 15, 2019...roughly one week from the 91th Oscars.

Sharp is also an 8K leader. Vizio and TCL will follow.

Dirt cheap, like VHS tapes @ thrift stores. ...Same with DVD players.
Plus, you don't need a HD TV; 480p TVs are dirt cheap too @ Goodwill stores.
That's where I shop for all my video needs and content.

No smiley on the third line, make a guess.

Slightly scary story, not gonna lie. Especially if they're stopping regular BD players too, as that removes the Dolby Vision excuse. However niche does mean niche, and you don't need a dozen companies making players for a small collector's market. Especially when Sony, Panasonic and LG are doing it so well and consistently (relatively).

Also the more niche we get the more likely a smaller electronics company might see an opportunity to make players built for that market. Pretty sure record players have that kind of setup.
