Then why hasn’t HBO released the other GOT seasons on 4K by now?

Because they're assessing the sales of the first perhaps?

Well, I did my part. Ordered season one 4K to support the series on 4K and also to hear the Atmos track.

If they don't issue them individually then how do they expect to be able to release them 6 more times with sigil slips, steelbook packaging, ect?

Nine months have passed since season 1 was released on 4K. You would think that they would have released season 2 by now, especially with the new season premiering soon. I guess it's either a complete box set or nothing. Sadly, I'm gonna go with the latter, I think casual viewers don't really mind if it's in 1080p, so they probably never saw the need to upgrade, add that to the people who won't buy individual seasons you get low sales.

There’s most likely will be a 4K boxset. HBO seems to never release past season individually. Just like they did with The Sopranos they expect people to buy the first season when they have no plans of releasing the rest of the seasons individually. I’ll bet anything HBO had no plans on releasing the other seasons on 4K individually or they would have atleast released 2 & 3 by now. This was the plan all along to get people to double dip just like they did with The Sopranos. I don’t see how they expect people to by 1 season of a show on a new format when they haven’t announced plans to release the rest of them.

Which was expected.

What I couldn't stand were the people on here preaching morals that other people need to support that kind of release and schedule. Especially given HBO's track history. Especially after we already bought all the blu-ray seasons, and multiple times for some of us. As if the market for Game of Thrones (of all things) in 4K might not actually be there, and we are supposed to foot the bill for the publishers sales forecasts.

Anyone who bought this season and then passed the blame really ought to reflect on these things. There is no idealism at play. They don't make additional 4K seasons just bc you bought one, or convinced 10 other people on here to buy it. Everyone else is not the problem. They've already milked customers to death on GoT discs. In fact, I'm buying my third set right now with the discounted BD steelbooks.

As much as I was busting some balls on the previous page when faced with a blanket "I don't buy first seasons out of principle" approach - as that's a sure fire way of killing off subsequent seasons, and not just on UHD as mentioned re: Charmed and MacGyver on BD - you're quite correct that this situation is a little different, that GoT specifically is a show that HBO have rinsed the shit out of on BD already and even its most hardcore supporters were groaning at the thought of the third or fourth upgrade in the space of a few years.

I think it's clear that releasing the first season was a "testing the waters" type release, just to see if Game of Thrones on UHD will sell. If we don't get a Season 1-8 4K boxset by the end of the year, I'll be very surprised.

It just is what it is, really. I was as upset as anyone about Star Trek: TNG not getting the support it needed to do the other shows. I launched into arguments about how $60 a season wasn't that bad considering the work that was done and how much the DVDs cost years before. Yet what happened when MacGuyver came out? I didn't like the show enough to spend $50 for one season. I guess a lot of people didn't like TNG enough either. Comes down to desire I suppose.

No, plenty of people liked TNG.
They were cheap and they groused about the price. If all the complainers had bought TNG on release we wouldn't be having this conversation because DS9 would be in HD.

There's not just one factor, yeah. For some it might be price. For some it might only be a middling appreciation for the show. For some it might be that they're super-fans BUT are tired of being serial upgraders of a multi-season show. For some it might be that they just don't "do" first seasons, it's all or nothing...and that neatly sums up the situation that TV on disc finds itself in, not only on UHD but BD too. All or nothing.

Sooo Season 8 is now listed on CDON: https://cdon.dk/film/game-of-thrones...u-ray-45165690

No picture, or release date though. But odd that nothing inbetween 1 and 8 is listed.

Makes sense that a 'new release' season would be more likely to get a 4K release simply because it's new, see also Westworld.

Unfortunately CDON will list so much crap just because of guessing that it will come out. They are not a reliable source at all. But at this one I think it's a pretty safe bet that GoT 8 will be released on UHD.

$60 per season for any TV show is too much. Game of Thrones is the only show I'll pay more than $25 a season as it is. In general I look for $10-$20 depending on how good the show is.

I don't consider it being "cheap" to recognize the relative value of home media, particularly after the studios have had years to milk their product for profit already (ads, streaming revenue, licensing revenue, previous home media releases, etc.). I recognize the restorations take a lot of work for home video, however a lot of the restoration work is mandatory anyway if these studios want to keep their old product relevant going into the future.

---

Bottom line, most of the problems with home media are caused by the studios themselves. For instance, dumb crap like a set for Seasons 1-5 of an 8 season long show...who's going to buy that (other than misguided family members around Christmas)? Releasing dumb sets like that also dilutes later profit on the final box set. Other things like not releasing with lossless audio, or not putting in proper restoration work to begin with, or changing aspect ratios, etc. et al. don't create confidence in a studio's ability to treat their product well (I still haven't bought Sword in the Stone from Disney because of how bad they screwed up that release, despite how much I enjoyed the film as a kid).

If you don't treat your customers as intelligent, and you don't treat your product with love, who's going to buy your crap at anything but a bargain bin price?

As it is, I'm terrified of what's going to happen to HBO releases now that AT&T is taking the reins and cracking the whip to release content faster. Quality is always better than quantity, especially if you want customers to pony up more than $25 per season.

Except you DON'T.

$10-$20 for 26 hours of programming on 6 discs, plus extras? Pressing and packaging and marketing costs alone doesn't cover most of that.

TNG Remastered cost *millions*

Yet TV seasons were $100 20 years of inflation ago. You have this perception of them being only worth $20 or whatever because media has become so worthless to a lot of people after Netflix, piracy and other such things changed perceptions. I'm not even saying you're wrong really, now-a-days $60 for a TV season IS too much, you're right, in relative terms. But the interesting thing is that it probably shouldn't be. As said above, TNG really earned its price, but no one cared. It is what it is.

I'm ten million times more a movie guy than a TV guy, so this effects me very little. Throw me a complete series set for $50 of something I have nostalgia for like Quantum Leap and I'll buy it, but 9 times out of 10 I'm too busy buying movies to care. For TV lovers though, they're really getting screwed by all this, as more and more shows skip Blu-ray (or UHD now). "Where is The Americans on Blu?!?!?!" they shout, and "I don't buy TV seasons for more than $10-20" is the answer.
