Default Ps3 Bug

Sometimes for no reason at all my ps3 which is set to hdmi video and toslink audio will switch itself to hdmi for both. Just last night i fired it up to play resistance 2 and there was audio but no video. I had left the disc in the system
so after turning it off back on with the same results i ejected the game which brought the video back up. Then it said a hdmi connection was detected
and i proceeded to set it up then went and changed the audio from hdmi to toslink.

I wonder if ps3 has a glitch/bug about hdmi video with toslink audio or with
leaving a game in the system. Outside of being inconvenient it's not a ps3
crasher. Still works fine...when this anomaly doesn't occur.

Yes there's plenty of ventilation and the reason i'm using toslink is because my
headset of choice is astro's a40 5.1 surround phones that even mix in chat
with the surround.

Anyone else run into this problem/glitch? I could take it off auto start
and see what effect that has.

I use HDMI and TOSLink as well. However, I have never seen my PS3 do what you have described.

It almost makes me wonder if you're holding down the power button when you start your PS3? You hold the button down to turn off the PS3. But if you hold the power button down to turn it on, it will redetect and reconfigure the HDMI and such. Only tap it to power on.

I seriously doubt i was pushing it too long though that's a possibility.
Sometimes when it turns on it's already reset without the hdmi detected screen.

My ps3 is a 60 GB and it's still got the stock HDD haven't upgraded it yet.

Hasn't done it again...yet but i wouldn't say it won't ever happen again .

A thought comes to mind. You might try replacing the HDMI cable and optical cable. A bit of a shot in the dark, but either could be responsible.

Optical cables in particular are very fragile. You have to avoid bending them. It you make any sharp 90 degree turns with them, it can damage them. If you don't know about this and treat it like any other cable, it will get little fractures in it and fail intermittently (or completely).

My cables come from monoprice.com so i have my metal tiped fancy toslink 6ft.
and my hdmi 1.3 going to different selectors a 1.3 4 way hdmi selector from
monoprice and a 4-2 toslink selector i got long enough agao i don't remember where i found it other than it was online.

I knew cat 5 was fragile like that but i hadn't heard toslink was handle with care
cable. With all the shielding and plenty long i doubt it's being strained though
as a precaution i turned off disc auto start. I'll just have to wait n see if it happens again.

Thanks for the suggestions.

This has happened to me a few times and I only use the HDMI cable. Not sure what causes it but I had to manually reset the video options.

Well at least it's no RROD but i wonder if sony knew there was a random bug
inside ps3 but it was far too late to fix it.

Even the mighty ps3 was a rush job
as sony thought their only real competition was 360 which is funny because nintendo sideswiped everyone with a non HD gaming rig of all things. Don't get me wrong i'm a metroid, zelda and mario fan but i'd have been more inpressed with a fully HD wii with 5.1 sound.

Oh no. You have that quite backwards. Cat 5 ethernet cable is actually rather durable. It's only the connectors at the ends that are a bit flimsy. Fiberoptic cable is the only variety of cable where the cable itself is fragile. Not because of any lack of shielding... it's durable enough that way... but because the fiberoptic strands have little tolerance for bending. They snap internally if they are bent more than a gentle curve, and it's difficult to tell that this has happened.

Anyway... no matter who makes your cables and switches, they could potentially be faulty. If the problem persists, I would recommend first omitting the switches from the arrangement and just connect the cables from your PS3 directly. If it still persists, change out the cables.

If it was something like that, Sony would have fixed it in one of the many firmware updates.

I had a Wii for a while, but sold it after LittleBigPlanet came out. It really is a previous generation system. I think the Wii did so well because the next gen systems started too early, and they were there in the gap.

The Wii has done so well because it managed to expand it's market far beyond the core gamer. It really created a whole new market of it's own and has millions of people buying it that would have never considered buying any game console in the past.

I had this happen a few times. Both times were caused by doing a system update. Seems my settings were lost when the update installed
