Three hours and 25 minutes might be a tad long to be watching guys running around in tights.

If thats what you think you haven't read the graphic novel. It is much more in depth than a bunch of guys running around in tights. And if you have read it and still think that then you missed the whole point of the novel

Awesome! I already can't wait for the theatrical version and now I am anticipating the bluray release before the movie is even in theatres.

Oh well, the bluray will definitely be a day 1 purchase for me.

I've seen the theatrical cut -- in my line of work -- and I'm still astonished at what Snyder et al have managed to pull off. It equals the best genre adaptation of the decade (for me, it has been FOTR), and then surpasses it. Even in the theatrical cut, there's a wealth of detail and a richness of storytelling that I didn't hope for even two weeks ago. And most importantly, it makes for a highly satisfying moviegoing experience even if you haven't spent the last two decades wearing out copy after copy of the graphic novel (and finally decided to keep the Absolute edition spotless for future reference).

So as good as the film is -- and 95% of it is verbatim from the book, with the other 5% either condensed or visually expanded or cleverly reordered -- and as much as you don't feel that anything important is missing from it, of course there is tons of stuff you could see more of. I'll be the first in line to preorder this Blu-ray edition, or editions, and I think I'll just have to cave and get the Black Freighter/Under the Hood disc next month.

This is going to be the best picture of '09, genre or no genre.

BTW -- I can't really discuss the movie at any greater length right now. Hope you guys understand.

It just just a lame attempt at a joke. I have not read the novel, but I am big comic book / graphic novel fan. Looking foward to it.

The total runtime for Tales From the Black Freighter is 62 minutes, so obviously they won't be splicing the entire film into this cut of Watchmen.

I guess they will be splicing scenes from TRTBF that were included in the original graphic novel.

So I'm left wondering if they will also include the full TFTBF in the Watchmen's Blu-ray realease as an extra?

I'm going to hold off on getting anything WATCHMEN related until the end of the year with what will probably be a massive Blu-Ray that throws in the kitchen sink as well. I MAY get the complete Motion Comic if it's not included in the big massive Blu-Ray of it.

But I'm glad to hear that even with the theatrical cut that it delivers on what we're hoping for it to be. It's nice to know that me taking the day off to go see it will be worth it.

Anyone else taking the day off as well? And the day before, I'm going to bring in an ice cream cake that has the smiley face with blood logo on it into work for everyone.

I will go see this in theaters and then I will buy the super extended Blu-ray and you know what I will enjoy all 360 (EST) minutes of it.

Studio is probably pissed because they didn't want this news out yet because they wanted everybody to buy Tales From the Black Freighter instead of waiting for the Watchmen blu-ray even though everyone already suspected it would be on there too.

Actually, the entire running time for TFTBF is more like 25mins and Hollis Mason's: Under the Hood is 35. You can read it off the jacket art on the net if you can find it.

Seeing as he said he's using all the parts he thought was good to begin with, I doubt he'd even bother including the full cut as an incentive and a bonus (and a way not to piss those off) to those consumers who purchased the standalone release earlier.

AWESOME!! That is what I'm talking about. The only way to see the theatrical cut is in IMAX. And I will definitely buy the extended version on Blu-Ray, day 1. BOOM!!

To each his own. I understand where you are coming from, but I think both are justified. I can't wait to see how well the graphic novel translate from the page to the screen.

I always like to read the source material before I watch the movie. So I can moan on how they didn't stay true to the book/comic.

It is my most anticipated movie of the year, but after movies screwed up Alan Moore's graphic novels of "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" and "From Hell" I hope they got it right this time. I am concerned that Moore took his name off the Watchmen movie credits, but hope springs eternal.

The Watchmen are based on Charlton Comics characters, which DC Comics aquired in 1985. Alan Moore had originally wanted to use the exact characters themselves, but when DC found out that many of them would be killed or rendered unusable after the story was over, they suggested using original creations.

Believe it or not, Nite Owl is based on Blue Beetle rather than Batman.

As long as you're going into that, The Black Freighter section comics that the kid was reading is based off the old horror tales of EC Comics of the '50s. Great stuff.

Can you say Tales From the Crypt? I thought you could.

FYI: Black Freighter 720p trailer up:

Moore never puts his name on the movies based on his work. At least from what I know.
