Default To use or not to use the Mat on new TT?

I've read 2 reviews on my new Marantz TT-15S1 (still awaiting its arrival) and they both differ in their opinion about using the supplied felt mat. Neither of the reviewers gave (in my opinion) factual reasons. I got the sense it was all a matter of personal choice.

I would like to ask for your opinion on this, as I need to decide prior to the setup process. Also, if I stick with the mat, should I maintain the use of the supplied Souther Clamp or use my existing Pro-ject Puck? I suppose this question should be asked in reverse as well without the mat.

I've heard it said that on an acrylic platter, one should not use the mat. But why then, is a mat provided? I'm a bit confused about this whole "mat" thing.

Any help and/or shared opinion you can provide would be most appreciated.

John
