I had to go with 28 Days Later..... for the simple reason that it had the most believable scenario for how the "zombies" come to be. Government made virus unwittingly unleashed by animal rights extremists FTW!

Wow! Lots of interesting stuff here. I agree with the argument that many of these movies are not zombie films in the usual sense. In an extremely broad sense, ok. But then you would have to include movies like Flatliners. After all, it has characters that die & are then reanimated. Audrey Rose could also be considered a zombie. Metaphorically, the Star Wars movies are also about zombies. Annakin Skywalker is killed and is reanimated as Darth Vader. Hmmm, I'll have to think about that one.

I don't recall any zombies in The Omega Man. Just plague victims, yes? I do remember clearly though that Charlton Heston was way more of a butt-kicker than Will Smith!

An excerpt of mine from an earlier thread:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...113#post927113

Quote:
I debated whether I wanted to actually put any effort into trying to determine for myself what is or isn't a zombie. On one hand, you've got the Romero-induced craze of creatures brought back from the dead who are primarily driven by their craving for human flesh. On another hand, you have the traditional concept of a person being brought back from the dead usually to do the nefarious bidding of his master. On the third hand, you have dictionary.com's definition 2.b that says a zombie is "an eccentric or peculiar person."

If we are to go by Romero, I agree that The Evil Dead films are not zombie movies. They are instead demon movies. If we go by the traditional viewpoint, however, you have a valid argument that they are indeed zombie movies. As for 28 days/weeks later, I just don't remember whether or not the angry ones were killed by the virus and then re-animated or if they were merely transformed. Sorry, my memory isn't all it should be. If they were in fact killed and then brought back, they would not be zombies in the Romero universe. They would be zombies, however, under the traditional idealogy. If they were never killed to begin with, they would be zombies by neither of these definitions.

If we all want to get along, 2.b is the definition to use since I think it covers all of our examples thus far.

In case, for whatever reason, you can't view the video:

This is 28 weeks later. That is walking. How is this not a zombie?

That pretty much proves it right there.

I'm pretty good, but if I get half my body torn off by the 'hatred coptor' I'd be probably laying down to die at that point and not still wandering around.

Cool

Bringing some originality to a tired genre was Shaun of The Dead. Another I would've voted for, but didn't make the list was Fido, also a refreshing take on zombie films.

That makes me sad.

How long has it been: since you watched it?

Have you seen it on Blu-Ray? ...Quite the improvement.

..The key is understanding the 70's. The low-budget feel on an epic scale, that is Dawn of the Dead (1978).

The performances (though done by amateurs) have a feel more real and personal, than the supermodels in the remake.

If you haven't seen the original Dawn, all the way through... You're missing out. The last 30 minutes is probably the best Zombie action ever conceived. I kid you not.

And for the record, I don't consider a running zombie a zombie. The remake made them animals. Roaring and running, like marathon runners... I'm sorry that isn't a Zombie film... that's something else.

Ron, seriously, you owe yourself to watch Dawn of the Dead (1978), all the way through: at least once.

Trust Me.

P.S. If you still hate it. At least, you've seen all of it. It's worth the experience... at least once.

...all the way through.

Let's not get into THAT debate again.

Simply put: If you can move your arms a regular speed {every zombie movie ever made} then you can move your legs at regular speed without rigor mortis setting in.

I won't argue the Blu-ray. I'm sure it's awesome. I saw the original Dawn years ago. Had the chance to see it in theaters in 1978 but I didn't. I just never "got it". I don't think it's worthy of a re-watch. I already did that 2 years ago and it still didn't change my views on it. I'm not the biggest George Romero/Tom Savini fan. I think George was a one hit wonder (Night). I know this will offend most but it's just my opinion. With that said, I think Night is one of the most important horror films of all time.

No offense intended, as I sincerely would never want to offend someone who starts posts about a subject as awesome as zombies, but how can you write the above paragraph after including such movies as I am Legend, The Omega Man, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later & four - count 'em four! - Mummy movies in a zombie movie poll? Even if the creatures within these movies are proved to be zombies, the majority of them can move quite quickly.
