Default Zombies: The Best Flick?

What is the best Zombie flick? Why do people like them? What's the appeal of the living dead?

Zombies or vampires?

Alive or dead?

Carnivorous or just blood drinkers?

Bruce reminds me of an old radio deejay.

"That's the new Van Halen so let's open it up to the phone lines...
Caller, you're on... Van Halen, love it, hate it, loathe it, lemme know!"

Night of the Living Dead is the grand daddy of 'em all. The most fun I had at a zombie flick would be Return of the Living Dead.

Night of the Living Dead for its comments on Racism

Dawn of the Dead on its comments of mass marketing

World War Z will be the next big thing.

I'd have to go with the original "Dawn Of the Dead." I really enjoy all of Romero's dead films because of the social commentary he adds to them. Really, the zombies are just an excuse for him to make a particular point - a different point in each movie. But they all have the same underlying theme: the zombies aren't the problem... people are what cause the problem to escalate to an apocalypse.

And I prefer Romero's shuffling zombies over the Olympic runner type, because to me there is far more dread involved. With the runners, you would end quickly - in the fact, the world would end quickly. But the shamblers... you can outrun them, but what's the point? Eventually they'll get you. And is it really a world worth surviving in? A slowly dying, decaying world?

That's what I love about the living dead. It's not so much what you see on the screen (although I do love me some Tom Savini-created zombie carnage), it's what you picture in your mind, and what questions you ask yourself.

If you have nothing to sell but dislike. Go somewhere else.

For strickly horror, I haven't watch a more haunting film then 28 Days Later however after seeing a few other members post Shaun of the Dead, I will have to say Shaun is my favourite zombie movie.

I don't really see Army of Darkness fitting this category, but I am required to vote for it as its one of the best movies ever made.

Thanks. I tried. What did I leave out?

By the way, what is the thing with Zombie movies? What's the appeal Sussudio? Why do people go and go and go? I don't get it? I just don't.

Someone explain.

i can't think of that many you left out (or any for that matter), you generally do a pretty wide sweep for all your polls

and to answer your question: because they kick ass.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) for 2 reasons:

-gives a great explanation of the living dead: "when there's no room in hell, the dead will walk the earth"

BUT MY FAVORITE REASON:
-the point of the movie wasn't ripping flesh/blood. the point was Romero's MERCILESSNESS on the american culture of materialism and greed when the lady asked "why do they come back here?" (zombies walking to the mall)
and the guy replies: "they've probably some memory of being here before, a place they felt comfort"

-the irony is NUCLEAR: next time you go the mall, watch everyone walking in, and i don't know about you, but i see an eery resemblence between the living "zombies" today and those in the movie....in both cases you have a hynotism of greed and satisfaction in material things. of course today, its more amazon.com, and not the mall, but same principle applies.

Army of Darkness definitely fits this category. There's a whole army of the undead marching! And besides, it has a hell of lot more to do with it than 28 Days / Weeks later... which are about infected living, not the undead.
