If I understand correctly, you're running DVI out from the cable box...HDMI in on the receiver? DVI only does video, no sound. You'll either need to run HDMI to HDMI (if the cable box offers that), or run an alternative audio cable (optical, coax).

The DVI output doesn't have audio, so there's no audio arriving from your cable box. You would need to run a separate audio connection from the set top box to the receiver. If the cable box has an optical or coax audio output, that would be the one to use as it will give you DD 5.1. If not, you would need to use analog stereo (the red/white cable pair).

You have to go into the receiver setup menu & tell the receiver which analog inputs to use for sound. By default it is trying to get it from the HDMI input.

Use one of the analog cables as a digital coax, assign the input on the receiver to use digital coax for audio. It will work until you can get a coax or optical cable. If you have a Scientific Atlantic cable box go into more settings in menu and select digital for audio, if motorola, no setup needed. Best of luck.

Set the audio input to Auto. It will then process both DD 5.1 and stereo PCM, which are the only two types of audio that will be sent from the set top box over that connection. You may (or may not) need to change a configuration option on the cable box to activate the digital audio output port. |

Erman_94,
I have the exact same set up as you. Pioneer1018 and SA3250 cable box. The Pioneer will not allow you to use HDMI over DVI and an optical input for audio. So you must use the Component Video (RED-GREEN-BLUE) cable. Take the output from the 3250 and Plug it into either Comp-1 or Comp-2. Use an Optical Cable and plug the output from 3250 into either Comp-1 or Comp-2. On the remote, press 'receiver' then press 'setup'. When the OSD shows up scroll down to number 6. 'Input Select' press enter. You will now be in the assignable menu. Use the scroll wheel to move between input selection (left or right). Stop when you get to TV/SAT. Scroll down to the Digital In, scroll right or left to wherever you put the Audio Optical Cable. Same for the Component In. Input [TV/SAT] Digital In [ OPT-1] HDMI [ OFF ] Component In [OPT-1 ] Press the Return Button on the remote. You should now have your optical audio from the 3250 and component video on your TV/SAT button. I renamed mine to "CABLE", which shows up on the Pioneer display. Good Luck cwh |

If your receiver can't do HDMI for video with a separate audio connection, you may want to run the video direct to your TV and just use the receiver for audio. That makes switching a bit more complicated (unless you have a good universal remote, of course). But, you may need to go that route if the video is better using DVI instead of component.

so you guys are saying there is no way to get audio from my cable box through a dvi-hdmi connection?
or is there a way to tell my receiver to take the video from the dvi-hdmi and audio from the component? sorry if this has been answered in your replies, im not very tech savvy and have read your posts over and over again. i kind of understand, but not really ![]() |

You can connect hdmi/dvi direct to tv, and digital coax direct to receiver. On cable box setup, choose dolby digital, and on receiver setup assign digital coax to input for audio only, for the input used for cable box. If your tv only has 1 hdmi input then use the component hookup the other gentleman suggested, but coax for audio instead of optical since you mentioned you didn't have an optical cable. Best of luck.
