Default No sound from cable box using HDMI

My cousin has a 4" HDMI monstercable hooked up to a HD cable box and he's getting no sound from all the channels, sound on works when his box is on SD.

Why could this be happening?
he's been watching SD on his tv for months now.

it could be any number of reasons. you have not provided nearly enough information.

first and foremost, all cable boxes, regardless of brand, manufacturer, or service provider, are notoriously unreliable, and it could be an issue with the box. as a HT installer, i've literally gone through half a dozen boxes with one customer to find one that would even activate.

that being said, it's more likely to be an improper setting in the cable box, or i assume, the tv which said hdmi cable is connected to. if there's an audio receiver, it could be that as well. there are several other possibilities, but without further details, that's about the best i can tell you. so check your menus and manuals, and report back.

when i was messing with the settings i made sure they were correct, i made sure his box was set to HD. im not over there now so i cant really give anymore info other than the HDMI is going from the box strait to his samsung tv.

Download the cable box manual. When you use an HDMI cable the box sends both sound and audio over it. If you have a receiver you are using to decode sound you must go into settings which was hidden on my box and deselect HDMI. It worked for me and the cable company had no clue.

Press the Menu button twice and then go to Audio Output setting and make sure its set to HDMI. If its not then you won't get sound. Also I had to swap out a cable box the other day then did not output sound thru HDMI for some reason.

MY cable box was so complex (ashamed to say) that the audio output settings were buried in the menu under the heading of "devices"...who the F looks under "Devices" for the audio settings!? Why not call it "Audio"...

TWC 8300HDC, by the way.

every box has the same settings?

anyways..buy an optical cable, call it a day. not worth the hassle and you gain nothing by having hdmi sound

Believe it or not - some cable companies do not have the HDMI on their cable boxes "enabled" forcing you to get a newer box (with a higher rental fee). I've seen this with C_X cable in the south. Plugged HDMI in - it worked for about 2 minutes then I get a message on the screen that flashes quickly and goes away about how HDMI is no enabled for this blah blah blah. Called the cable company and they verified it and told my friend that he must get the new box. This might be your problem. Cable companies have disabled the USB ports on their boxes also (but by FCC law the firewire ports must be activated).

OH. I see! Time-Warner? they'll tell you . . . . .is it the Samsung Box? or another box?

Actually you do. You get to run one single cable to your TV.
