This is really surprising. I had thought these would never hit HD and usually are only on shelves in P/S DVD versions. These should be massive updates over the super old flipper DVD letterbox transfers.

Both films are surprisingly solid films with the best things in both being Roundtree and the scores.

It wasn’t really surprising. A lot of us correctly predicted that Warner Archive would release them to tie into the new Shaft movie:

It’s a shame that Warner didn’t take better advantage of having the rights to the complete series when the Paramount distribution deal was in effect but the upcoming Netflix movie woulda rendered it incomplete anyway.

When I was a teenager making my first big (25minute) super8 Bond parody, one of my two other partners on the film played me 'Are You Man Enough?' from the third SHAFT film, and I still wish we'd used it for the opening credit/training montage.

Wound up using the honky-tonk music from MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and shooting the scene in broad daylight in a graveyard, so all the choices wound up seeming at odds with the comedy, since all three of us were digging in our heels at this point in shooting, proving the adage that a committee is a life form with six or more legs and no brain. In the end, since I was the guy with the sound-on-sound projector who was doing all the cutting, I scored the whole thing with John Barry cues (nearly all of my music at that point -- spring 1976 -- was either Barry or Goldsmith, something that is still mostly true), except for the end credit vocal from the 67 CASINO ROYALE, taped off the tv, used during a chase featuring an augmented Schwinn bicycle.

I might just take the movie out (only have a vhs dub handy, need to get the film transferred before it disintegrates) and run it against ARE YOU MAN ENOUGH just to see how it plays.

So even if the new Shaft flick is bad, at least it probably got the original Shaft sequels released on blu-ray.

There will also be a Triple feature release of the Shaft films including Shaft, Shaft's Big Score and Shaft in Africa.

Will the special features for the first Shaft still be included here, do we think? I don’t own any yet and it’d be nice to grab them in one swoop.

So the big money question is: what is the difference between the three pack and the three standalone discs? Well, aside from the terrible artwork on the 3 pack, I mean.

I wound up asking diabolik over on twitter if he knew what the difference between the indivual releases and the three-pack was:

Quote:
I asked the same question to the label and I was told it was a 3 disc set with the 3 individual discs in the case.
So if you are shaft-less like I am (I only have them on DVD), the three pack is the way to go!

Man - it's ABOUT TIME!!! I only had to wait about ten years! They can keep Shaft In Africa, it is all about the first two!

They put out the first one on BD about ten years ago and never got back to the others. I have always been curious to see what can be done with the picture quality on Big Score! Hopefully they will have a making of the other two...

Any word on the triple feature release? Because the page link provided to the WB shop is no longer active. I’d LOVE to grab all three in one set on blu
