Are the two trilogies going to run simultaneously or consecutively?

I guess they could alternate years, but that would be confusing. Otherwise, one of these trilogies won't get started for 10 years.

My hunch is that Disney will just go with one trilogy in the end, and the other will end up as a lower budget Disney+ event.

I think the reason Star Wars isn't doing too well in China is because the films are still riding off the Original Trilogy. The OT wasn't released in China until a few years ago and it was not received well at all (mostly due to Chinese audiences taking it at face value and criticising the special effects, not accounting for the fact that the movies were 40 years old).

A new trilogy set in a completely new time period with all new characters and very little references to other movies could do well in China, as it'd function as a clean slate for the franchise.

This is all true. The Chinese did not have Star Wars 40 years ago and so there is no nostalgia baked in. To them it’s just another movie series. To Americans and people from other countries it’s a must-see phenomenon.

I'm pretty sure Star Wars is huge in Japan. Don't assume that the entire Asian continent is China alone.

Probably for the best. Think of the fuller lives they are living having been spared that nostalgia.

Oh boy.....SW can't catch a break.
And it continues.....

If the writing moves to the SW trilogy, then we could have ourselves more divisiveness than The last Jedi...

So was it reported that Weiss and Benioff would direct?

From Iger..."We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie we release will be theirs. And we’re not saying anything more about that.”

Benioff and Weiss, as well as Rian Johnson, could probably produce good series, as long as they are using their own characters and story arcs (and Johnson needs to avoid wild goose chases). The prime complaints against them have been that they made fundamental changes in established characters.

Having Han, Luke and Leia in the new trilogy helped attract attention and sold a lot of tickets, but has hampered the storytelling. Leia and Han were only present for nostalgic reasons, and Luke's re-imaging has been the topic of endless debate. The story line of the current trilogy would have been better if the original heroes were treated as legend in the new series.

I hope the new trilogy is not weighed down by Kylo and Rey baggage.

These films will have new characters, and be set in the time if KOTOR.

Benioff directed one episode in season 3 of Game of Thrones and Weiss directed one episode in season 4. They're both credited with writing the vast majority of episodes.

I am just guessing they will write and produce the new Star Wars trilogy, but someone else will direct.
