Default Game of Thrones - Greenlit on HBO!!! (George R.R. Martin)

Brining the "Fire and Ice series" to HBO was being discussed many months ago and seemed to have fell through during the writer's strike; with even the author reporting on his website a few months ago that the deal looked to be dead.

Seems things have finally been taken off the back burner.

It's a great boon to have this series on HBO. The stories are filled with sex and violence (with some extreme degrees) - and could never be properly told on a network.

If you are unfamiliar with the series - think "Rome" (HBO series) with fantasy elements sprinkled throughout and you begin to get the idea.

Now, if only the author would get that fifth book out already!

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39063

Quote:
HBO has greenlit the pilot for a series based on George R.R. Martin’s series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels .

The plan is to adapt one novel each season, starting with 1996’s “A Game of Thrones.”

Writing the HBO version are Martin himself (who previously wrote on CBS' "Beauty and the Beast") and feature writers David Benioff (“The 25th Hour,” “Troy”) and D.B. Weiss (who authored a screenplay for the proposed “Halo” movie).

These are apparently very long, grown-up fantasy novels, with thousands of characters – the major ones quite flawed and complex - and lots of sex, violence and political intrigue.

According to the Hollywood Reporter:

Combined with True Blood, this also suggests an interesting, AintItCoolNews-targeted direction for the network. Less edgy-PBS, more R-rated Comic Con.

Great news, although I do not get HBO on my Directv package. I am half-way through the book right now, thanks to the recommendation by jkwest.

here's a quote from the author...
Quote:
HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

Default update

Here is a little update on this future HBO series...

Director: Thomas McCarthy
Writer: David Benioff

Cast:
Tyrion - Peter Dinklage

Most, if not all, of the remaining cast will be from the UK

Filming for the pilot is scheduled to begin on October 12 and last until November 6th in Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK

not sure how long after filming that they will air it, but I am guessing some time in early 2010!!

So glad HBO has this and not some small network - there is a small chance this could be done right.

I tried to watch Rome for the first time in between re-watching seasons of Game of Thrones a couple months ago, and it did not play well in comparison. It felt like Rome is to GoT as "I, Claudius" is to Rome. Just in terms of filmic style and production value, it felt rough.

I didn't finish the first season of Rome. Now I guess I really should finish the series, just so I've given it a more fair chance and to know that I did.

Anyway. I mostly only say this because "think Rome, but with fantasy elements sprinkled throughout" feels so amusingly quaint in hindsight.

I think that holds true for the later GOT seasons, after the show exploded in profits and production value (I’m guessing post-Red Wedding), but Season 1 of GOT feels very similar to Rome. It’s partly why I got into the show around the time it premiered (was looking forward to a good follow-up to Rome). Even the battle sequences through S2 I remember looked exactly like Rome’s in their low-budget effects and presentation.

Man, can’t wait! Just got finished with the Sopranos and Wire. Nice to see HBO gaining another possibly great show. What a time for TV! I’m beginning these shows called Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Who knew Malcolm’s dad could act? What could make this better is a show based on my favorite ongoing comic series, The Walking Dead, but I don’t think that’ll ever happen. Oh, well.

I really hope this "Game of Thrones" thing is a success. That would be great.
