I'd love a definitive Citizen Kane from Criterion

Personally, I feel a double-dip would be sort of a dud for spine #1000.

I can't think of Criterion approaching anything more definitive than Warner's UCE of Citizen Kane. It is OOP, unfortunately.

Indeed. I own a copy — one of the first BDs that I bought — and it’s a beauty. No need for Criterion to get involved just for the sake of it.

A few Ebay sellers have The Complete Monterey going for around the £21 mark which seems a good price. Tempted myself. I've included a single link to the Speedhen one however if you search you should find a few other sellers for around the same price..

It's a nice thought, but the chances of collecting together the filmography in one box looks pretty slim.
At least five of his films are licensed out on other labels in the US. Then there's the issue of Studio Canal owning another five films - SC have a deal with Kino (at the moment) and haven't licensed to Criterion in quite some time. So there's about half of the filmography out of the picture.

Upgrades for 'I Vitelloni' and 'Juliet of the Spirits' are still possible though. They would certainly better the Cult Films releases.

'Citizen Kane' is a plausible guess, yet I can't really see any point since there's little to improve upon.

Kino's insider previously confirmed that Criterion does have a new Studio Canal deal, so those Fellini titles are on the table.

Also, it's possible that for a one-off, possibly limited box set, licencing deals can be made. Look at the fact that the Bergman box is all region, for instance.

They managed to get a few extra titles in the AK100 set that they've never released on their own as well, I believe.
With the Criterion Channel they're re-licensing things that are OOP on disc for limited streaming engagements - this month they have The Man Who Fell to Earth along with its extras - so Criterion are definitely happy to do special deals to get something out there for a short time. Sometime I assume it doesn't cost them much, and sometimes I assume they're willing to stump up something extra because they're just film lovers and they want to get it done.

Ah...I really should look at the US section of the forum more often.

Perhaps. I don't think it would be region free though. Warner Bros. could easily object to 'Amarcord' being region free, and so could Universal with 'Casanova', partly since it's with Fox/Disney in areas of Europe.

The Bergman set was able to go region free because it dealt mainly with the same, and less restrictive, licenses - that's not to say there were so few that it won't affect its future availability, I suspect it might go OOP after two or three years.

I noticed that at the weekend. It's great they can salvage OOP titles for the channel - any idea how long they'll have it up for? So far, I've only spotted expiration dates for the Charles Burnett collection.

They have a section for titles leaving at the end of the month, which has 25 in there this month, but TMWFTE isn't in there so a couple of months at least.

Criterion currently has 12 Fellini films in print, only 5 of which have been transferred to blu ray thus far. They've also been at work securing further titles, presumably with a view to a major release in 2020, which will be the centenary of the director's birth.....

A Fellini set would be kind of annoying. I already have 6 of his films on blu Ray. Have to think hard about picking that one up or just stick with the cult films releases, even if inferior.

I'm sure they would release all the films separately too like they are doing with the Bergman set.

The thinking gathering momentum is that it will be a Welles box à la Bergman's Cinema set.

I'm assuming the confirmation of Mark Cousins' The Eyes of Orson Welles and Joseph McBride's recent disclosure that The Other Side of the Wind will be a forthcoming Criterion release has led to the speculation.

I think that with the success of the Bergman set, Criterion would possibly go to great lengths to acquire what they can of Welles' output.

**EDIT** The individual who put this theory forward was the same person who predicted the Bergman set apparently.

The only Fellini film I've seen is Satyricon, which I turned off about halfway through because it was a complete waste of time.

Is this atypical output for him or can I safely write off his entire oeuvre?
