I don't know what's going on with Dr. Strangelove. I understand that stock occasionally runs out, but it seems like it's been unavailable for quite a while now.

When I got to the second B&N I checked, they had three copies on blu-ray, all in perfect condition. So, I grabbed one. I've wanted the Criterion release for some time, so I figured, why take a chance?

Seeing all of those Criterions in person at Barnes & Noble is a sight more beautiful than the Eiffel Tower.

I could've easily dropped $100 on this sale if I had given in to temptation. But I decided to stick with one movie that's been on my wishlist for years and always seems sold out immediately whenever Criterion.com and/or Amazon run Criterion sales. (I'm sure it's available at first, but it's somehow always out of stock by the time I look - I've had the worst luck with it.)

(No was a separate Amazon order that just happened to arrive today. I'd love to see in the Collection and think it would be quite worthy, but I don't anticipate that ever happening.)

With The Criterion Channel around now, I am going to limit blind buys until a movie lands there and I get to watch it. But Twelve Angry Men is something I know and love... (The problem is, I also know and love In The Heat of the Night, The Princess Bride, and even some of the incredible movies I've watched on The Criterion Channel this week alone like In a Lonely Place and Ace in the Hole. I behaved myself though and stuck to just the one that's been on my want list the longest.)

The plastic seal on Twelve Angry Men is a bit weird - it looks rewrapped - but I don't think it is because it has the blue circle, and the DVD version was wrapped similarly. (I think a couple of Criterions I ordered from Amazon in the past came with the same type of weird seal though, so I'm not going to let it worry me after waiting this long to finally own the movie.)

Medium Cool is fun - it's a little dated, but I felt like it held up. Doesn't hurt that I'm a Robert Forster fan.

Put a B&B order in, pretty excited:

The Heiress
Police Story
Klute (Yes!)
Swing Time
Detour
1984

Just picked up:

Death in Venice
Blue Velvet
All That Jazz
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Elevator to the Gallows

Planning on grabbing Klute and the BRD Trilogy upgrade once they hit shelves in a few weeks.

Is it just me or do Criterion’s just feel way cheaper then they used to be. Like idk how to describe it. They just don’t feel like they have as much heart put into them anymore. At least from the outward appearance.

I agree. I've mentioned before that there's something about soviet b&w cinematography from that era. Ivan's Childhood has such a depth to it that it could almost be 3D. One of the reasons I really want an upgraded The Cranes Are Flying.

I'm actually really interested in checking out some b&w soviet era films similar to Letter Never Sent. I'm gonna try to grab Ivan's Childhood on my next trip to B&N. I've had that one on my radar for a while now.

I really hope they upgrade Ballad of a Soldier as well. Although the cinematography isn't as flashy as the Mikhail Kalatovoz films, it is still visually quite remarkable.

I rewatched Young Mr Lincoln last night. I still find it a little simplistic in its idealism and a little corny with its over sentimentality. But Henry Fonda is terrific and John Ford really knows to craft an image, the cinematography and lighting here are regularly outstanding.

Not a CC or Ford favorite, but still well worth watching. Criterion’s blu is a stunner.

I'll just chime in to say that John Ford is IMO the GOAT of all time. Though, that's just my opinion. As, for my favorite Criterions I'll try to narrow this to as few as possible though of course this list is by no means definitive.

12 Angry Men
Day For Night
A Hard Day's Night
Paths of Glory
The Graduate
Classic Hitchcock(The Man Who Knew Too Much, The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, Foreign Correspondent)
Notorious
Le Samourai
Seven Samurai(no list can be complete without this one)
My Darling Clementine
Stagecoach
Red River
Some Like it Hot
You can't go wrong with any silent Lloyd or Chaplin
Detour
It Happened One Night
A Night to Remember
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Sanjuro and Yojimbo which can be bought separately or together.
A Touch of Zen

Among boxsets: The Zatoichi Trilogy, The Samurai Trilogy, and the Dietrich & von Sternberg set.
