I'm beginning to think Kino doesn't have 1990's Narrow Margin. Would've been a nice announcement to balance out all the pre-1970 titles being revealed on weekends.

Can anyone confirm whether RAH edited his post about the releases. I'm pretty sure he originally wrote that the releases had better scans in the UK, etc..

I don't understand the impulse to snarl at one another on this board. We're all film fans and we ought to be nicer to one another. KLI is a busy person and if they take the time out of their day to answer our inquiries about potential releases, we should be adult enough to show gratitude instead of attacking them. If KLI is acerbic on occasion, you can't say he is unprovoked.

Remember, without these small label outfits, these films would simply not be available for purchase. Given that the studios have mostly abandoned their catalog titles, I'm glad that somebody is releasing films like They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and Harry in Your Pocket on Blu-Ray, and you have to admit that if the releases aren't always pristine, Kino adds features that give these discs added value, unlike some other outfits (like something you put in a martini) that release merely adequate video with zero added features.

There is already so much ugliness and hate floating around right now--let's not add to it.

Way to leave an important factor out... a lot of the frustration from the customers' end is due to problematic issues with certain releases that get ignored or dismissed, e.g. the alleged transfer issue with Kind Hearts and Coronets that started this latest bickering match in the first place, or the audio pitch issue with Bitter Moon that others have brought up.

Respectful discussion is a two-way street and if the Kino Lorber Insider is not in a place to address those issues that people bring up, he can simply and politely turn the other cheek and say "My sincerest apologies for any problems you may have, you can contact Customer Service for assistance" or "I'm sorry to hear about the problems you are experiencing, I will forward them to the correct department to be addressed". It's an unfortunate fact that sometimes if you are the "face" of a company you have to put up with a lot of crap, but how you respond to that goes a long way to creating goodwill with the people who keep you in business.

Will there be any more Mamie Van Doren movies?

Perhaps Running Wild or Untamed Youth.

I figure that different labels have them, but am not sure.

That’s the main point here.
To be frank, this kind of thinking seems so hypocritical. It's basically saying, "I can be as rude as I want, but I'm going to hold someone else to a higher standard because of their job." Not representing a company--and in essence, only representing yourself--does not just give you license to treat people poorly. It's this kind of mentality that drives away the insiders who post on the forum, because they look at this kind of thinking and say, "why bother?"

I'm not saying this to provide a blanket excuse for KLI or any other insider; I'm only saying that respectful discourse is the responsibility of both parties, and both customers and an insider are equally responsible for how they conduct themselves.

I interpreted DawnShadow as stating "if you represent a company and feel it isn't your job to act professionally, then it's not mine to act professionally with you." I.E. respect is a two way street, which is the point. That's just me though.

Not anytime soon. Some small ones here and there and most likely a horror one in October and Noir one in November.

There are no issues with the subtitles for Alphaville. Whatever wasn't subtitled was intentional. These are the same subtitles on the UK Godard boxed set. We did change merde to shit, it was originally translated as damn.

We care more than you want to give us credit. No one can equal our output, we've released hundreds of titles for the love of film, knowing they won't be big money makers. We had dozens of people check Bitter Moon and the majority of them did not hear this issue. It's a very good seller for us and we've had zero complaints, except for some of the people at this and another forum, which are most likely the same people with different names and avatars. It was also approved by all the key platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Hulu, etc.

So by majority you imply some of them still noticed the issue but that doesn't matter since it's not the majority? You guys are really something I'll tell you. Even a reviewer on this site couldn't recommend it but I guess he's part of this conspiracy.

We caught the subtitle issues for THE PARK IS MINE (2016 release) and sent them to the authoring house, but they never fixed it. We weren't happy with it, but it's not a big enough issue to warrant a recall, you can still understand what everyone is saying, a bit annoying, but not a big enough deal.

THE EMERALD FOREST was one of our earliest releases (2014), we included subtitles for about half of our release back then. The wrap should have not included the English subtitle mention, it was a printing typo.

I'm not saying this as an endorsement or condemnation in any way, but you have to think of it from a business perspective... even if there is an actual problem with Bitter Moon, the amount of people who will notice and/or complain is probably so small that the expenses involved in recalling and replacing are probably not worth it. That doesn't make Kino an evil company, it's just simply something that all companies weigh out when there's potential problems.

Think of the scene in Fight Club when Edward Norton talks about vehicle recalls.

I don't own this disc, and I haven't seen any clips provided that demonstrate this audio problem. If this is such an obvious issue, can we hear it? I just checked YouTube for "Bitter Moon audio issues", and nothing came up.

Is there any concrete evidence that the Kino release is substandard? Can someone point toward a demonstration of the problem? It's foolish to expect Kino to eat the costs of replacing discs for a sound issue that is audible to only a tiny minority of people.

And as I said, we need to try to be more polite. KLI has done nothing to merit such rudeness.

However, both included versions of the "talkie" version seem to have issues, as I mentioned earlier.

The version on disc 2, labelled as 1.20 (which would be the OAR), appears to be squished to around 1.10.

I'm unclear about the reason for the apparently stretched 1.33 version being included on disc 1.

I would definitely like to hear Kino's comments on this.
The packaging 1.20:1 ratio was a typo.

The correct ratio for the master we received from Studiocanal is 1.11:1

The same as every other release of the film.

I asked KLI this awhile back after the Noir set was released and he said no. I hope things will change. One of my holy grails is Girls Town with the shower/song scene put back in but I would be happy to have it on blu any way I can get it...
