Can’t speak for the remastered blu, but the UHD is unbelievable. I’ll never watch that old disc again.

So the regular HD disc has a new transfer as well?

Yes, it’s the 4K restoration. Have only watched the UHD disc though, so I have no idea if the HDR to SDR conversion is good. I heard there were some issues with it on the 2001 remastered blu-ray.

Probably still better than the old transfer though, right?

Definitely, considering the 2007 disc has an extremely low bitrate and looks filtered. Also has ghosting in some scenes.

I do like the warmer look of it, though I don't know if that's accurate.
The new BD definitely has more detail here:

You can see why some studios don't bother with remastered Blu-Rays when the prepped master is designed for UHD in mind. The HDR to SDR conversion looks underwhelming to say the least. Old 1080p Blu-Ray of The Shining holds up well and still looks better than the new disc IMO.

Yeah looking at comparisons there are shots which do seem to look better on the old disc. That one shot someone posted clearly has a lot better detail in that background area though. I think there are problems with both discs unfortunately. I was hoping this was gonna be a slam dunk.

There is much focus on the video, but what about the audio? Saw this in the theater last night, and it was wonderful. The huge takeaway from the viewing was the audio was superb. How is the audio on both discs. It was always going to have a soft look to it the way it was shot, but what makes this have an eerie vibe is the sound design.

Not about the UHD, although I did pick it up.
With this being nearly the 40 year mark and Dr Sleep being released next week, I was really hoping for the score to be re-released. I asked numerous record companies if it would be a possibility and all said no or ‘it’s not in the works’. Even asking Water Tower music and Run Out Groove which are with WB. There’s a few copies on eBay but 200$ for a record is a bit steep.
Has anyone heard anything about a score re-release?

That’s impressive, I wouldn’t have known how to price something like that. Crazy how much difference in comparison to the other horror pieces mentioned.

A little disappointed that the blu-ray looks so dark here in these screenshots. I bought the UHD based on what I saw in the theater. The actual 4K DCP looked pretty damn amazing overall. I figured there would be some minor differences between the UHD and blu-ray but the blu looks a bit too dark to me. I guess I will have to wait until I actually see it in person to know for sure. Gotta wonder why some of these releases aren’t checked knowing where some problem areas might lie. I don’t know anything about the differences between HDR vs SDR conversion issues or how to avoid them, but, the pros doing these should. Not ready yet to dive into the 4K world. Not sure it would be worth it for a few select titles.

Overall, I liked the 2001 blu-ray, which was taken from its 4K master; minus a few little issues. Guessing The Shining will end up being the same way. Too bad about the original theatrical audio not being included.

The second cut played in the US theaters, and has been the only cut available in the US on television and home video. The third cut is the shorter, international cut, and (I think) has been the only cut available in those markets up until now.

So if Kubrick had a strong preference for either cut, why would he allow his not-preferred cut to be available to millions of viewers? He definitely blocked future releases of the cut we know that he liked the least.

I'm not saying it's impossible that he would deliberately force some countries to watch a cut he considered inferior, but it doesn't make much sense to me that he would. What makes sense to me is that the two cuts had some different creative goals, and that he felt that both cuts met those goals to a degree which satisfied him.
Kubrick once said he didn't want the film to be widescreen on home video and cropped to the TV set's picture tubes in the days before widescreen TVs, so sometimes I think he's wrong. It would be great if the original footage turned up as an extra one day, but as it hasn't happened yet, I doubt it will.

Even if the footage still exists, I doubt it will ever be released - like the 2001: A Space Odyssey deleted scenes - unfortunately.

Received my blu-ray today of The Shining. Can`t comment on the 4k due to the fact that I have yet to get a 4k player. The blu-ray looks pretty good and is comparable to the screenshots posted here on the site. It`s not as dark looking on my television as some of the screenshots seem to imply. I really like the look of this transfer, overall.

Is that an actual quote from Kubrick, or just something that was being said by one of his assistants who always says that however WB is currently releasing the films is “exactly how Stanley wanted it”?

How would the film be cropped to fit 4x3 TVs if it was released on home video in widescreen? Did TVs actually crop the sides of widescreen home releases? I can’t ever remember that happening to me.

On the back of some of the DVDs (and maybe VHS tapes) it said something like “This film is being presented in an open matte, full-frame format, the way Stanley Kubrick intended.”

Is this a new Blu-ray or the same 2007 release?
