You should have a discussion with richteer (he's just picked up some Spires) and he toe's them OUT slightly! Mind you, he's got room...like a lot of room!

A good starting point for setting up your Martin Logan ESL's is 3 feet from the back wall, 2 feet from the side walls, and your listening position 10 feet back from the speakers.

For toeing in the speakers Jim Power's toe in technique is the best and very easy to do. Jim Powers is the service manager at Martin Logan.

"My technique for ideal toe-in is pretty low tech but extremely accurate. Get a flashlight. Sit in the listening seat. Hold the flashlight directly above the top of your head. Aim the beam of light at the electrostatic element of each SL3. You will see a vertical streak of light reflected off of the film inside the grid. It will be a very narrow and distinct vertical streak. As you change the toe-in of the speaker, the vertical streak will move across the front of the speaker. Toe the speaker until the light streak is between 1 ½ to 2 inches from the edge of the wood trim on the inboard side. In this position, the SL3s will be aimed past you to the outside. In other words you will not be facing the dead center of the speakers. You will be facing the inner 1/3rd of the panels curve.

This technique works extremely well regardless of the distance to the speakers or even between the speakers. It will also provide you with the flattest response across the bandwidth.
Hope it works for you, jp"

Yes I do know the toe-in with the flashlight, not sure if this is a good thing but Jim Powers knows me by name

None taken here! By all means, I would love to see the rest of your gear. Its not everyday one can see the ML's in a non showroom environment. I personally love your Sunfie amp. It must give those ML's a good workout.

We do have lots of members who either love ML's or own them.

Speak for yourself! Even if people can only afford entry-level stuff, there's no reason why they shouldn't want to lust over more expensive kit. One person's affordable is another's expensive...

Then it's up to us who have experience beyond those usual brands to broaden people's horizons. I think it's fair to say that many of the people who own those brands here would probably buy something better if they were better informed.

Going to BestBuy/Circuit City or whatever is NOT the best way to get informed about really nice (though not necessarily expensive) audio. It's up to audio enthusiasts like me to share my passion and knowledge, so that people can make better informed decisions.

ML's aren't harsh, but they're very revealing. The harshness you're hearing is most likely to be from earlier in the playback chain (unless you're driving them REALLY loudly!).

I was going to mention that! Move them away from the front wall too, Bill. You'll get much better sound! My Spires are about 5 feet into the room and 4 feet from the sides.

I personally look forward to reading about expensive and out-of-my-budget gear (which is why I'm in this thread). It broadens my scope and I have picked up a lot of different useful information.

Have a look at some of the galleries and you'll see that not everyone is in the "category" you describe! One thing I do know....the people here are just as passionate about their system (whether HT or 2-channel) and I for one....love it!

Richteer,
Thats some serious vinyl you have...What type of music do you listen to?

May I also ask, what kind of tube amps are those? I've only read about them never really listen to any.

I have never found them to be harsh at any volume, but then I have lots of power driving them. The TGA7400 is rated at 400 Watts @ 8 Ohm's, 800Watts @ 4 Ohms and 1200 Watts @ 2 Ohms per channel.

I bi-amp the ReQuest, They are 4 Ohm speakers that dip down to 1.2 ohms. I have had many amps driving them over the last 8 years
  1. Dual Sony TAN9000ES Bridged (could not deal with the Load) 210 + 210 W (8 ohms)
  2. NAKAMICHI PA-7 II (sounded fantastic, wanted more power. I do miss the sound of this amp) 225 + 225 W (8 ohms) 325 + 325 W (4 ohms)
  3. ATI AT2505 (Would run very hot due to the low Ohms) 250 x5 W (8 ohms) 375 x5 W (4 ohms)
  4. Sunfire TGA7200 (Very stable with ML's) 200 x7 W (8 ohms) 400 x7 W (4 ohms) 800 x7 W (2 ohms)
  5. Sunfire TGA7400 (Got such a deal I could not pass it up and I put the TGA7200 on ebay) 400 x7 W (8 ohms) 800 x7 W (4 ohms) 1200 x7 W (2 ohms)
ML are very revealing speakers, the most revealing I have ever owned. you will hear diffrences in wires
