the only screwdriver i could find small enough was a set of watch/jewelry screwdrivers with very skinny handles that didnt provide enough leverage or grip to work easily, all i know was it was a real pain gettin them out

When I started up the hard drive on mine, it just asked to reformat it, and that was all. That's what the instructions said too.

I wonder why you ended up having to do an additional step?
and thats what i was expecting to happen, so i was worried when it didnt work that way, but as fas as i can tell from a quick internet search, its just "occasionally" that will happen, but no real explanation, i didnt look too hard because downloading a copy of the firmware to my external HD worked fine and didnt take very long

Are you getting that error every time you check your trophies? Or did it just happen once?

It's likely to only mean that your internet went down.

Which hard drive model did you end up installing, btw?
it only happened on the initial sync after the HD swap, it doesnt seem to be effecting the use of the system at this point, but marine mike suggested power cycling all of my data storage devices to see if that takes care of it, so im going to try that before looking any further into how to fix that error, it doesnt seem to be too big a problem

and i installed a Western Digital 320GB HD

Ah. Yeah. Your problem there was not having the right tool for the job. Those skinny precision screw drivers are designed for jewelry, not electronics. Skinny = No torque. Which is a bonus if you're trying to not wreck a gold watch.

Using a properly sized phillips screw driver with a real handle, the screws come out quite easily without any heavily application of force.

I wouldn't worry about it then. It probably doesn't even have anything to do with the hard drive swap. Just a spurious internet failure.

Aha. Doing a little research on this drive, I see two things. First, you need to install the firmware update off the Sony site when you upgrade using this drive... like you discovered. And second, everyone is saying it works great in a PS3 after it's been installed.

So sounds to me like you're golden.

thats what i figured, i couldnt find a screwdriver with a handle that had a small enough head to fit, i know i have one somewhere, but i recently moved and theyre probably in a lost forgotten corner of the basement, after stripping one of the screws i discovered i could do the others fairly easily with the jewlery screwdriver if i used a wrench to hold the screwdriver and to get a little leverage on the screw

and after using the PS3 last night, i didnt see the error message at all, so i guess it was just coincidence that it happened after the HD swap

yeah, it seemed on my google search that it was a somewhat common thing that the firmware needed to be DL from the internet and reinstalled on that model HD, but it did get me a little worried when that message popped up at first, and no complaints so far, i finally have enough room to do the install and start playing some of my new games, another successful HD swap, if i had all the right tools to do the job, it literally would have taken me 5-10 minutes to do the swap, and the only time consuming thing would be just waiting for the backup and restore to run
