It isn't about whether Disney, or any studio for that matter, can make money on a physical release in a vacuum. I fully expect big blockbusters to have a new release window. Catalog titles will get smaller and smaller. If by not releasing some catalog titles drives more sales to streaming, that is what will happen. A 20 million hit on potential sales is worth it if it means a 30 million gain on streaming with the added bonus of shrinking the physical market.

I can see Disney drying up all the current titles and then re-releasing something for an limited anniversary set down the road.

Nah. Reckon they just need sales from physical media to pay for the 4K remasters of content they'll put on Disney+.

The streaming service will likely take a while to recover development and infrastructure costs. I'm guessing this is also partly why they offered the D23 3-year membership limited time discounts.

Normally a company would not want to compete with themselves by having so many same-genre titles (Pixar and marvel) released all at once. Simply because most people can't afford to buy them all so less popular ones will languish with wide selection of more popular ones released at same time. The fact that they did so makes me wonder if Disney thinks the shelf life of the 4K UHD format is going to be expiring soon.

Besides being a highly debatable assessment, it is the the biggest example of self-aggrandizement that I have ever encountered. Is your self esteem so low that you need to provide unsubstantiated self-promoting blurbs to bolster your fragile ego? Is the admiration of anonymous forum members so important to you that you need to tell us explicitly that we should respect you? I have never met any forum member on any forum anywhere that felt the need to paste a quote praising their own self. I can't decide if I should be laughing at you or pitying you.

Default I've only upgraded select titles to UHD

The rest I keep on blu. Of course when I purchase any more now I only get the UHD unless the version doesn't exist. No way was I going to upgrade everything I had to UHD lol.

There are some circumstances that lend some credibility, though. First it's the end of the year so decisions like this Walmart one would make sense to implement now if a major course correction since beginning of a new year.

Second the breakneck pace of classics released on 4k does have me concerned. The accelerated rate we are getting big name releases likely means the studios don't have too much faith there is much potential left in 4k growth, otherwise they would wait for more potential buyers before unveiling the big guns like every other prior home video format. And all clumped together too which implies there is more concern to sell the discs quickly than maximize sales by reducing self competition through staggered release.

Third some of the players getting out of the hardware market... Hopefully ps5 will help offset this somewhat though Xbox's support didn't seem to get it done.

Disney owns so much of the content now that if they actually did pull out of 4k disc and focus on streaming it would immediately doom the format, so rumors like the above video combined with other factors in the marker definitely concerns me.

Fiscal years don't end on Dec 31. In fact, it's Jan 31 for Walmart.

Second, Walmart can do whatever it wants with its own merchandising. The video comes off as nothing but a whine. There is no solution to his perceived problem. People buy their 4K blu-rays elsewhere and very few Walmart customers are buying them there. Hence the decision. Buyers stocked the stores well this year and 4K titles didn't sell. It's not some conspiracy. The flagship stores with large media sections are moving very few standard full priced movies, with a lot of floor space dedicated to that department. This is a fact. I know this bc I visit two of theses stores almost weekly and their stock hardly budges.

Finally, yes, Disney owns much of the market now thanks to their acquisition of Fox. What are any of us supposed to do about any of that? Watching and sharing crappy youtube videos doesn't move the needle in that department. "Raising awareness" has nothing to do with anything. People are either buying movies or they're not. Walmart has thousands of financial analysts that forecast and track these kinds of things.

Look at the brands that are selling in every other department at Walmart. They're not exactly known for their high-quality merchandise. It shouldn't come as any surprise.

Also we have it better than many other parts of the world where they can't even shop for 4K UHD discs at B&M retail.

The Walmarts in my area stopped selling LG OLED TVs. The only possible conclusion to draw from this is that OLED TVs are in deep trouble; if Walmart shoppers aren't buying them then no one does.

We're all doomed! Though I'd be more worried about this "news" re: Disnee and Walmart if the Mouse really gave a crap about UHD to begin with. Yes I know they've like quadrupled their total virtually overnight with that massive dump of animated stuff nearer the end of 2019 but a cynic might think that D+ had just a little tiny part to play in that decision. Now it'll be back to business as usual: first run movies will come out on UHD - though even then not in all territories - and a trickle of catalogue stuff will follow. We'll have some more Star Wars stuff to be sure to be sure, but you didn't have to be Nostradumbass to see that coming.

Mine too. I was almost able to score a 65" C8 for $999 but they never ended up dropping that low in my metro. The 65" got as cheap as $1399 and then it finally sold and the 55" didn't make it past $999.

Even if they're dumping their biggest hits on the market as a final hoorah I don't see why that would be an evil thing for them to do. It's better than the alternative. Disney has always barely cared about catalog releases, so their biggest hits were probably all we were ever gonna get on UHD anyway.

I would honestly prefer if all movies came out at the same time on a new format. $4000 and I’m done. But yeah, physical media is dead.

This is more of a question for me.

No, I’m not re-buying everything. Just my favourites; a select few. The caveat here is, if there’s a film I like, and own on Blu-ray, and a UHD appears, then drops in price, and I have nothing else to buy that month...maybe. But otherwise, no.

But what about new films? Depends on the price.

Shoot I'm 5 to 1 the opposite. I want 5x as many old movies re-released on 4K rather than these brand new stinkies we get.

50's-80's very few 90's.

For every Once Upon a time in Hollywood...

I'd take Rosemary's Baby, Psycho, Enter The Dragon, Barry Lyndon, or Big Trouble in Little China on the format but hey that's me.

These *NEW* movies are killing the format imho.
