Yes, that'd be a fairly sizable production.

Mangold is a solid Director. Spielberg can now move onto other projects.

As much as I want to see Harrison in the role one more time, this news really makes me wish this wasn't happening at all now.

This just feels wrong. Spielberg belongs in the directors chair and it seems very weird that he has exited. These last two films productions have been dragged out so long I cant believe this is a scheduling issue. I wouldn't be surprised if there is something going on behind the scenes that has caused this because this doesn't sit right at all. Spielberg is as much as part of Indiana Jones as Indy himself.

Interesting. I wonder if Ford will stay on... or if this news will send the film back to development hell.

In some regards, I like the idea of Mangold getting a shot at it, I think he has an eye for "character" moments in movies instead of 100% action. With Indy, at this point, you're gonna needs those moments.

Spielberg... if I recall... he gave an interview a while back and said that he couldn't make the type of movies he made earlier in his career because he's changed and grew. So, maybe he just came to the realization that he's "outgrown" some of these ideas that they were considering for Indy 5.

Probably Spielberg decided he wanted to do something else after West Side Story and decided that if another Indy was going to get made it had to be now due to Ford's age and still good health so maybe he declined but has given his blessing?

If Spielberg's heart isn't in it, then I'm glad he's stepping down. But if ever there was a time to just start over entirely -- new studio, new director -- it kinda has to be now, right? I know Ford's chomping at the bit to do another one, and I suppose he must've given some sort of tacit approval of Mangold. But without Spielberg (and is John Williams returning?), I just don't get it.

I guess Mangold is a decent choice, but it’s a bit pointless without Spielberg helming. Like others have said, if we’re gonna return to it now with someone else in charge, might as well start afresh with someone new as Indiana Jones, after all, it is inevitable.

Maybe this means The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara is filming soon?

They really should just reboot this whole thing. I really don't need to see an old Ford without the original creators involved.

Only if Spielberg managed to cast the lead role (a child) - which he couldn't do a couple of years ago, and is allegedly the reason the project was shelved.

Just James Bond the franchise now. Keep it in the 30/40s, recast every now and then. Hire different directors.

I kinda think he’d have hated Star Wars less if Peter Jackson had directed.
