Speculation on the 60s Universal westerns within:

[Show spoiler]We know we're getting five in total - four theatrical films, and one TV movie. 3 of these had prior DVD releases in the US, while 2 have not.

We established yesterday that the TV movie appears to be Stranger on the Run (1967), because there are no other eligible Henry Fonda candidates given the actors the Insider has previously ruled out. This will be one of the new-to-disc titles.

Yesterday, the Insider also confirmed they have something with James Caan, which to my knowledge can only be Journey to Shiloh (1968). This, then, would appear to be the other new-to-disc title.

So that leaves the 3 titles with a prior DVD release. The Insider has confirmed today they have nothing with Doug McClure, eliminating Shenandoah. He recently said they have nothing under licence starring Alain Delon, so that rules out Texas Across the River. And as far as I can gather, that only leaves 4 possibilities:

The Last Sunset
The Ballad of Josie
Gunfight in Abilene
Rough Night in Jericho

I think The Last Sunset is certain, for obvious reasons and others I'm about to explain. The remaining 3 films are all from 1967, which represents a problem in that the Insider has said there are only 2 films in the deal from 1967, and one of them appears to be Stranger on the Run. So if that is the case, there can only be 1 other western from 1967. I think Gunfight in Abilene is unlikely, so it's probably between Ballad of Josie and Rough Night in Jericho (I suspect it will be the latter, given it has a German Blu).

It might be that I'm overlooking something with a DVD release. But this would seem to leave us with 1 60s western that cannot be accounted for at first glance. There are two possible answers I can think of:

1) 1 of the titles is a double-dip, i.e. something that Universal have already released on Blu-ray. That said, I can only think of The War Wagon, and that is also from 1967, so it doesn't fit.

2) The Insider has made a slight error, and the title in question did not have a previous DVD release. I say this because if you look at the options for the 1 title from 1960, I've narrowed it down to these (can't see any realistic double-dips):

Chartroose Caboose
Hell Bent for Leather
Seven Ways from Sundown

None of these have a prior DVD release (and I'm aware Chartroose Caboose isn't a western, I've just listed all the apparent options left for 1960). We know they have 3 Audie Murphy titles (including No Name on the Bullet), and there are two candidates here. From what I can gather neither Hell Bent for Leather nor Seven Ways from Sundown have official DVD releases in the US.

Of course, one small mistake with the numbers given by the Insider would change the picture entirely.

How about:

KL Insider:

I note that copyright expirations have finally started to move forward again. Would you please comment how this does/does not make acquisitions by KL any easier?

(By expirations, I meant that anything copyrighted 1923 or earlier expired in 2019. The copyright for anything copyrighted in 1924 or earlier expired in 2020. I admit that films in the 1920s were silent, but it's still a valid question. It will be interesting when movies copyrights from the 1930s start expiring.)

Just trying to do my part to get away from "do you have" or "does <insert studio> have" questions. And I'm genuinely interested.

Thanks in advance.

Would you be able to give a general timeframe of when you expect to release The Black Marble and Tender Mercies? Thank you.

I'm a few weeks late to the party but I totally missed the announcement of the Barbara Stanwyck collection set, thank God I saw it just now on the home page. That's definitely a day one purchase.

I am thinking maybe there is a bidding war going on for Shenandoah (1965). I sure hope Criterion doesn't get it or we won't see it for another 10 years....

Weren't Shenandoah and Mary, Queen of Scots with Twilight Time at some point in their Universal deal? Since their operations have drastically slowed, those two may have went back to Universal or went to someone other than KL.

I thought for sure that Kino picked up Breach (2007) in the latest deal, but it's just been announced as an April release from Universal's MOD (pressed) line. I know it's even been speculated that this could be one of the 4K titles, but it appears we can cross this one off the list.

Got in a last-minute order:

Dog Day (Special Edition) aka Canicule
Retroactive
The Robber
Running Scared (Billy Crystal, Gregory Hines)
Transylvania 6-5000 (didn't even know this was on Blu-ray!!!)
The Woman in Red
Wanted Dead or Alive (Special Edition)

I originally added The Woman in Red to get over the threshold for free shipping because it's one of the few '80s movies I've never seen, but then I decided to also add The Robber to my order because it looks really interesting.

7 movies for $62 is pretty good.

I sure do hope that isn't the case. Because I'm getting close to importing the German BluRay.

So my order has said processing since March 7th. Is anyone in the same boat? It normally doesn't take this long, and just wanted to see if I was the only one having this issue right now?

Kino Insider - Does the Universal deal include any more titles that were released on HD-DVD but are still awaiting the jump to Blu-ray? If so, can you say how many? I think the list is down to just these:

Accepted
Balls of Fury
Carlito's Way: Rise to Power
Evening
Half Baked
The Hitcher (2007)
The Pianist (is this with StudioCanal now?)
The River
The War

It'd be nice to get them all if for no other reason than to bring closure in that regard. I stupidly bought a whole bunch when the format wars 'ended' and then found myself wanting to get rid of them a few years later and they were nearly worthless by then. Luckily Best Buy's 'upgrade & save' promotion was very helpful and I got to trade a lot of them towards $5 store credit towards blus back then during a time when I was trying to build the catalog collection.
