Grain fineness can also be a factor. 70mm produces a much finer grain, so in going from 35mm OCN to 70mm release print, the earlier you make the jump to the larger negative, the more resolution you'll see in the release print. I've read of going straight from 35mm OCN to 70mm show print, as well as other iterations, such as 35mm OCN -> 35mm interpositive -> 70mm internegative -> 70mm release print.

So you could think of a 35mm->70mm blow-up as (very) roughly corollary to getting a 4k UHD disc of a 35mm OCN scan vs getting a simple HD BD disc of that same 35mm OCN scan.

Love Me Tonight is the greatest Lubitsch movie Lubitsch never directed.

I just adore that one, especially Beyond the Blue Horizon.

Just received a shipping notification for the April 7 releases Angel and Supernatural. Couldn’t be happier. Now if only I could preorder Love Me Tonight, Desire, and Midnight...

Because of the larger frame size of 70mm, you get more even illumination compared to standard 35mm. In addition to 6-track sound. Of course, 4-track magnetic 35mm was also possible. Of course, it depends on the film and depends on the lab work. 70mm blowups were generally for top-notch venues in major cities.

It's worth noting that until really the late-70s/early-80s, 70mm blowups would generally be from the 35mm camera negative instead of an intermediate element. One notorious example of mishandling is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

One exception would be the handful of films with true IMAX 15/70 prints. For the IMAX sequences in The Dark Knight, the IMAX prints were produced directly from the camera negatives for maximum quality.

Coming June 9th!

Kiss the Blood off My Hands (1948)
• Brand New 2K Master
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Jeremy Arnold
• Optional English Subtitles
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc
• Theatrical Trailer

Screen legends Joan Fontaine (Rebecca, Suspicion, The Bigamist) and Burt Lancaster (Desert Fury, I Walk Alone, The Train) star in Kiss the Blood off My Hands, a classic film noir about fate and love amongst the most unlikely individuals. Former POW Bill Saunders (Lancaster), now living in England, is scarred with unstable and violent tendencies. After killing a man in a bar fight, he flees the scene and manages to find cover in the home of Nurse Jane Wharton (Fontaine), who agrees to take him in and believes his story that the killing was an accident. Now in love, Nurse Wharton tries to secure Saunders a job delivering medical supplies when he’s released from prison after serving time for fighting with a police officer. Things take a turn, however, when a racketeer (Robert Newton, Odd Man Out) who witnessed Saunders’ murder threatens to turn him into the police unless he agrees to assist in a crime. Beautifully shot in glorious black-and-white by the great Russell Metty (Touch of Evil, The Lady Gambles) and stylishly directed by Norman Foster (Journey into Fear, Woman on the Run).

The first film that comes to mind for me is John Huston’s MOULIN ROUGE from 1952. BFI released it in the UK recently, but I would prefer to support KINO if it’s a possibility.

KLI Insider, any info at all you can share at this time?
New new deals to report. We were close to signing another studio deal, but now it's delayed due to the pandemic.

No, I think they're planning to add some titles to the WHILE IT SUPPLIES list and reduce some of the current prices.

Kino Insider - Of the 7 remaining new-to-disc 60s titles in the Universal deal, would I be right in speculating that 3 of them are from 1968 (so 4 in total with Isadora)? Thanks.

KL Insider - Apologies if this has already been asked (someone else please enlighten me if so) but do you have the rights to any other StudioCanal Delon and Belmondo films? Would particularly like 'La Veuve Couderc', 'Mr Klein' and 'Notre Histoire' for Delon and 'Stavisky' and the Verneuil directed films for Belmondo.
