Default Ong Bak 2 Review

So saw Ong Bak 2 on an import DVD and here's a quick review of it.

Story? Better than most of his other movies. The son of a man of noble blood is almost killed as part of a sacrifice seremony but is saved by a group of killers who are against the current royalty/government. They train the boy in each of their specialties and they go on to show eachof the styles later on in the film.

Action? This is what Tony Jaa is famous for. Brutal realistic fight scenes and great choreography. He does not disappoint. The only issue I had was that unlike his previous movies, there are many more cuts this time. While Ong Bak and Tom Yung Goon help shots for longer periods of time and showed the skill of all involved, this movie has more cuts. The thing is though you can tell that they are using two cameras for the cuts so the scenes are almost continuous.

Overall? This is a Tony Jaa movie first and foremost. He is the new martial arts star. It's no wonder Jackie Chan made a cameo in one of his movies to kind of "pass the reigns".

Recommended.

I am really looking forward to it. I wonder if the additional cuts have to do with Jaa directing this time?

It could be. I mean there are still plenty of those slow mo shots that show the impact and I LOVED those shots. The way that the cuts are done don't interfere with the flow of the action.

[Show spoiler]There is a lead in to an Ong Bak 3 at the end but it make completely NO sense to how that is possible. It's like at the end of Gladiator if they shows him still alive and planning on taking over the empire. It's the main part of the movie I have a disagreement with.

Tony needs to goto Hong Kong and make a movie there.

He did, cool! Like Arnie in The Rundown, huh? Which one was it? I've seen Ong-Bak and The Protector...

It's in the Protector when he gets off the plane. If you blink you will miss it. I'll see if I can find a screen shot.

EDIT: Just checked it out and it's a Jackie Chan look alike. Apparently they put it in since Jackie is Tony's idol.

If you look around online you'll find some articles about it but Ong Bak 2 was hellish production and the studio is not willing to break the contract and Tony has begged for them to let him go but they are refusing. They signed him in 2003 for a ten year contract to appear in only their films. The salary is really small too and right now Tony Jaa is homeless because he sold all of his possessions to pay for final shoots for Ong Bak 2. When he left the set, I believe February 2008; to meditate, approximately 75% of the film was shot. They then went out in May to finish the final quarter that needed to be shot. Jaa even went on talk shows in Thailand and he looked like hell. He was even crying about how the film and the studio has ruined him and his current financial state.

Yeah and considering Ong Bak brought in a little over 20m world wide theatrically .. and probably cost under 1 million to make.. he should be pretty well off. It's pretty aggrevating. I guess Thailand money holders are very corrupt group of people.

I've bought movies from Thailand via eThaiCD but I stay away from the American films unless they are they are released months before their domestic release because they censor nudity and graphic violence. I had gotten the Thai VCD release of 28 Weeks Later, in English with Thai subtitles, a month before it's US DVD and I was like; "WTH!" when they had found the mom and were hosing her in the chemical shower. It was blurred.

Better than most of his other movies?? What! are you crazy? the movie's plot is a big mess. The story is nonsense and the fight scenes aren't as good as Ong Bak and Tom yum goong. The only good thing about the movie was the fight scenes, but that wasn't enough to save the movie. If you want to see great fighting and a good movie, watch Ip Man or any other Donnie Yen's movies.

It's better than him running around for two hours trying to get his elephant back from a transexual mob boss. Or running around for an hour and a half looking for a statue.

Quite a few parts in the movie did not really make sense to me.. like when he was fighting that animal chick in the tunnel/cave. Was that supposed to be some kind of test? Who was she supposed to be.. just some random off the wall character with no sub story? It was weird they didn't mention anything about her or explain it really. Unless I missed something..

Also,
[Show spoiler] was that dancer towards the end supposed to be his friend from childhood? She looked at him weird when he said his parents name.. yet they did not conclude that story at all.

Come on.. Donnie Yen has been in several sub-par martial arts movies. Flash Point was a bore.. and if you want to complain about plot.. what about Dragon Tiger Gate?

[Show spoiler]The pirate leader said somethign about him having to face his fears int he cave, kind of like Luke did. The girl is the same girl. I think the editing could have been better to make if flow a bit easier.

I still don't understand the ending though.

Maybe the US version will have better subtitles. I remember watching an early/Thai version of Chocolate and the subtitles were terrible. When I bought the Blu-ray they were much better and the story details made more sense. Ong Bak did not come across as bad.. but there might be better subtitles coming.

I could not get into Chocolate too much. I wanted more styles of fighting.
