Indeed, as would I. With that said, however, I am pleased with the current US release. It's pretty solid and filmic, to my eyes, and other than the CGI/FX, which already looked dated at the time, it's a solid release. I hadn't watched it since the days of VHS, so the BD was a real treat for me! Nothing like seeing Captain Picard riding sand worms, baby!

Nope, nor do they ever intend to, contrary to the false promises they made at the very beginning. The Dune 7 notes are now sort of the SF-literary equivalent of Donald Trump's tax-returns.

Nowhere in Heretics and Chapterhouse was Frank Herbert even *remotely* setting us up for a final confrontation with super-murder robots from ancient times which required an additional six entire prequel novels to prepare us for. If Frank had written the seventh book, it would have been completely, utterly different from what Brian and Kevin gave us.

Giant robots are a terrible, terrible addition to a nuanced and subtle universe full of forward-thinking futurist concepts and social adaptations. A philosophical crusade against things that hold back humanity by making life too easy is something that fits extremely well with the original series. It addresses a valid complaint of our own present-day culture, and in fact demonstrates how visionary and prescient Frank Herbert could be.

Giant robots literally enslaving human beings is just stupid and clichéd. And two-dimensional, hackneyed, Evil Cackling Mustache-Twirling Super Computers Who Literally Murder Babies Just For Fun™ are even more of an insult to one's intellect. When I picked up the new novels and started reading them, I hoped for more than just the same old regurgitated crap that every two-bit skiFfy writer can produce.

This is why people detest Brian and Kevin's books. They are terrible, cheap knockoff money-pit books cynically written in a coarsened, plebeian style riding on the coattails of a fantastically-rich narrative that I was happy to have left on a cliffhanger. I don't need everything answered for me -- my imagination was enough. But I really, really didn't need to have a bunch of lazy, cash-in, Hollywood-ripoff nonsense added in on top of all of that.

It's literally sh*t-tier filler writing to cashgrab his father's work. Chris Tolkien said he had his father's notes and then actually released the vast majority of them, and gave us many beautiful stories in the process. Brian Herbert said there were notes about Dune 7, never released them, then released a two-part book that tied into the giant killer robots from his filler prequels, and brought all the main characters back again for some sequels and interquels and sucked out all the philosophy for stupid Star Wars-battles.

They threw out his notes, and they damn well know it.

Unless it's a new scan, which I highly doubt, it should look about the same as the US disc or worse. Virtually all of the available BDs of Dune use the same 2K scan that was used for the 2006 DVD steelbook release. Currently, the best transfers of both cuts is the OOP DE 2 disc set: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dune-Blu-ray/112601/ It's actually going for less than 40 Euros used, which is a lot cheaper than it was going for in the last couple years.

Yep. I have only seen the US disc, the UK disc and this 2-disc German release. I did a quick comparison between the UK and US discs years ago and the UK release was a mess (slipcover was nice though). The US disc not only looked better, the PQ and AQ bitrates were around DOUBLE that of the UK disc.

The German release seemed to me to be a little better than the US disc. Certainly not worse at any rate. And you get the the extended cut on another disc which is well worth having. And I think I paid about €10 for it!

EDIT - sorry Goof, don't know why I am replying to you about this as I know you know this anyway!

It's quite all right. I enjoy talking about Dune, Star Wars, and war films at length. It doesn't matter to me what the subtopic is about within each topic.

As I said earlier in the thread though, if we get a UHD of Dune it's going to coincide with the release of the new film. If it doesn't happen at that point then I have my doubts about it ever occurring in the future.

Yep. Lets hope the new Dune is as good as Blade Runner 2049 was. It has to be a 15 at least I hope...

German Koch Media just confirmed on FB, they’re working on the Dune release coming later this year. They didn’t specify if it’s gonna be a 4K UHD release though.

Did they give any specifics? I don't use Facebook or social media at all for that matter.

I don’t think Koch Media ever is, but if it ends up being a 4K UHD, that won’t matter.

Nope. The guy asked them if they would have a new 4K scan, but they just confirmed that the release is planned for this year, they are working hard on it, and asked for a little patience.

There's also the French blu-ray of Dune by ESC coming out on July 8. They say it's going to be DTS-HD MA 2.0 (possibly original stereo mix?) and a new master.

https://www.esc-distribution.com/hor...247208160.html

With Villeneuve's Dune hitting cinemas this December (hopefully!), this should be a good year for Lynch's Dune fans as well. ESC, Koch and (fingers crossed!) Universal's very own 4K UHD - plenty to choose from!

We’ve known this for a while, and the long-standing knowledge is that Ybiversal is releasing a UHD. That was reported months ago.

Doesn't offer the extended edition, so that was an easy pass for me.

That is actually more phonetically pleasing than Universal IMHO.

I didn't realize that Lynch is proud of everything that he has worked on except Dune. He considers it a "huge, gigantic sadness in his life" and a "total failure for him". He attributes this to the fact that he did not have complete control of the film. Well, I think you did a great job, David! He has "zero" interest in seeing the new film by Villeneuve.

While I can’t cite an exact quote at this moment, I’m pretty sure Lynch has no interest in watching any films these days. At least not new ones.

It would be interesting to have seen a pure David Lynch Dune that allowed him to do what he wanted.
