Overkill for movie/game distribution? Resistance:FoM is 22GB! I guess the games are overkill too. Anytime people are limited, creativity is stifled and growth is limited. Why would you cast a vote for that?

How much of that 22GB is game essential stuff versus a bunch of showy 3D animated cut scenes?

does it matter? it's the ability to create these showy 3d animations that make current games such a beauty.

otherwsie, we're back to pong and pac-man

Not to me. I've found that cut scenes are like movie trailers. You watch'em a few times and then you don't want to see them anymore.

I assure you that it doesn't take 22GB for gaming textures and sound. This is a lot of pork added to the game to justify using Blu-Ray drives.

i forget who posted it, but full 1080p games require some obscene amount of storage for all those textures. i won't pretend like i know the numbers but if i remember correctly it would be fairly easy to approach 20 gigs no problem. thus, it really may not be pork as you say.

If that was the case, why not just make it 16GB? I would say the ability to have a 40 person online game with that level of detail takes space, wouldn't you?

Ever played a massively multiplayer game ?
Noticed how most don't have cut scenes, and take up many DVDs ?

Yep, that's the textures and models taking up that space, and most are very compressed. Now repeat that part about "textures not taking up space" with a strait face.

It's time you go to a game developper forum and ask some questions to educate yourself about that artistic medium before pulling opinions out of nowhere.

Ethan

most of the data in a MMOG is server side and the portion that isn't is likely better stored on local HDD and not a slow optical disc.

Ok I'll say it with a straigh face.

gaming textures are crafted to be as detailed as they can for their small size. They don't usually take up space ...cut scenes and other extranneous "eye candy" is what takes up space.

There ....it's off my chest. Whew.

That is False. You obviously don't know crap about game design. Please get some education here : www.gamasutra.com, read the game developper's mag every months if you can, and come back with us in the world of "Logic".

And can you stop pulling opinions out of nowhere ?

wow, this is degrading fast and off-topic.

as for multi player games, it would make no sense for any graphics to be stored server side. the only service a server provides is a place to log in and transmit movement, and weapon data while also providing data regarding bots. the client would then receive these small data bits and integrate them into the larger game. otherwise, large amounts of graphics data will clog the pipe and produce serious lag.

exactly or you can use textures that aren't particulary great ie something like ffxi so that most of the game world can be stored client side and all the calculations can be done client side but just the textures are added. its still like a 10 gig game and its graphics are very poor.

I remember very well in early 90s ppl seriously arguing about 25mhz 80386 CPUs being overkill and absolutely unnecessary for home use. Same for 1gb hard drives, 4mb of RAM and so on...
Just because today's games are on single DVD doesn't mean 25GB is an overkill. Simply it wasn't there, so industry used what was available.
Using your logic a lot of things were "overkill" at some point in the history, yet they're or were adopted and ppl used them daily...

Agreed, and on that note this thread is closed. It's fine and good to have differing opinions but we need to debate without the wild comments.
