It's rendered the movie pretty much unwatchable for anyone remembering what it's "supposed" to sound like. I was hoping the Blu release would have offered the original audio as an option, but no, and I doubt this is the kind of catalogue title Universal's gonna put out on UHD anytime soon.

Here's the opening credits ripped from the original VHS:

Now, imagine that push-in to the house that accompanies the "directed by Don Bluth" credit overlaid with extraneous human voices chattering away, completely obscuring James Horner's lovely music.

My god... Those different voices... WTF were they thinking? What was wrong with using the original (and superior) voices?

When a company has a disc replacement program, how long does it generally take before the newer version is available to purchase?

A few months, but you still have to worry about getting old stock.

It comes across as if they wanted the change the characters from children into adults with the different voices :/

What's really weird is that the re-dubbed voices actually match the mouth movements more closely. Listen to the line in the redubbed version where one of the orphans says, "You're nothing, you're junk, you're trash!", and it perfectly matches the lip-synch, where as the original version "Yeah, you're one of us now!" does not.

Regardless, I hate the new voices. The tragedy of that scene in the original version is that Fievel was getting shoved around by orphaned kids who were only a few years older than he was, yet already had the jaded cynicism of adults due to their lot in life. By re-dubbing them with adult actors with goofy voices, it ruins the intent. I also miss the tossed-off "Pity-ful!" at the end.

That’s because adult voices were the original voices (and animated to those tracks) before they changed it to actual kids for obvious reasons. I assume Uni accessed an early mix as the basis for the 5.1 track and whoever prepped the mix never saw the film or consulted Bluth.

Grease no longer even has the remix as an option, but on Superman it is still the default track. The original Dolby mix is there though if you want to hear it.
I always go with the original theatrical release sound first, but I’m not above at least one repeat screening with a remix, just for the curiosity factor or to have fun with my sound system. Some I’ve enjoyed, like GOLDFINGER, but most have been abhorrent, starting with that stepping in dog crap track on the 90’s “restoration” of VERTIGO.

Pardon my ignorance on the subject, but is there a way to do a multichannel remix without resorting to new foley work or otherwise imposing replacement music or sound effects? If so, what have been some of the better ones on disc?

Not really. The 5.1 "remix" of films like "Judgment at Nuremberg" or "The Manchurian Candidate" are generally worked from a finalized mono element and they sound terrible with fake stereo effects like phasing (then there's also the aggressive filtering that makes the whole film sound even more like arse).

It depends. If it’s a film that has many elements that need to be separated than creating a faithful mix can be difficult. However I have seen some instances where a film that was originally mono have been upgraded to surround with the mixes being largely faithful to the original. Willy Wonka and Breakfast Club come to mind.

In theory it would be possible, but in reality, it's rare for films to save the raw audio "stems" which would be required. Also, a big problem is that if post-production is rushed, it's possible that raw stems don't even exist, that things like ADR might not be recorded "clean". For instance, the English dub track of "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" only exists with the music mixed in, which is why they can't do the uncut torture scene in any English version.

Wait, what?? After all this talk of the original mono, I watched the previous BR in mono and didn't hear that at all! Though I wasn't listening for it either.

Okay. So I purchased the Best Buy 4K steelbook. Now I hear that both discs have faulty audio and Universal is correcting that?

How or what are the steps to ensure this happens?

Thank you!

Sounds like they’re only going to replace the 4K disc and not the BD. If they are, they need to word that better.

I specified in my email that I wanted *both* the UHD and the BD discs replaced.
