Watchmen, as originally printed, was a 12 issue mini-comic series yes, but now its a graphic Novel.

That would certainly not make it a regular novel.

Exactly. The term "Graphic Novel" is just the highbrow nerd word for "Comic Book".

They're trying to somehow elevate it above just the average comic book.

Dark Knight Returns was originally a series of comics, later put into graphic novel format.
