Unhappy 1st Blu disappointment

I just got 4 BDs from amazon. FF, 5thE, Blue Planet (spectacular!) and Roving Mars. I couldnt see the last, since it is indeed REGION A. Since now, all "A" movies worked fine here in Europe, and only Fox titles had been locked. And Mars is Disney. Why this foolishness of HDDVD-like region encoding? That can only encourage piracy. My choice for Blu was partially due to almost region free encoding for all movies, not the only, but important advantage over hddvd crap. Is this going to be a rule in the future? And why - this is completely irrelevant for copy protection of BDs...

HD-DVD is actually region free (currently), not BD. You can ask in the insider thread for why they would specifically region encode that title.

BD leaves region coding up to the studios. Disney IIRC likes to region lock their stuff. Everyone else...not so much.

Well Pirates are Disneys, and they are free... and they are their most prominent release...

I use DVDspot.com for looking up region info by title and UPC. Regions are a pain to the consumer but it is the Studio pushing for it. IF disney were to start making HD-DVDs they'd probably follow the same practice.

U are joking??? All hddvd movies on amazon and sendit (EU) shows region 1 or region 2 exclusivity. It even reminds U it might not work with your player if u are from different region. If this is true, i am shocked...

yes they do say that but HD-DVDs are indeed fully region free.
Its one of its advantages over BD. there are no region locked HD-DVDs.

At some point this could be subject to change and frankly i think it will but as of today i can buy a HD-DVD anywhere in the world knowing it will work on my player. this should be a must in these early days as differnt region gets you some of the exclusive titles from the 'over' format.

Fox are also region encode die hards. If HD-DVD ever was to win, this for europeans would be one of the reasons.

I buy almost all my dvds from the USA as its just much cheaper and you guys get the movies quicker. In truth the BDA should of let RC die, there is no point to it, its just as easy for me to buy a USA BD player, so what does RC stop exactly?

Also dont forget that many HD-DVDs are combo titles so the DVD side will be the side that is locked not the HD-DVD side. stupid but thats the way it is.

5th Element is a catalog title from SPHE, so region free. FF is I assume Fantastic Four which is Fox, so should be region lock; you got lucky. Blue Planet is from Warner, so region free. Roving Mars is from BVHE, so region lock.

New titles from SPHE in the US are region lock, outside of the US may not be.

Oh...the caveat is if it's a catalog title. I was told (so kep in mind this may be wrong) that they don't have region encoding on movies that have been released worldwide. The region locking was to prevent importation before release date.

Curumo,

You may want to bookmark this site, which keeps a list of all the US BDs that are region coded and region free (and vice versa for the discs published in Europe).

U got the point... its just like some dvd relic... i even have T2 BD which says "Region 1" ... but for me, bad news... i built my dvd collection mostly from sendit (what a stupid name after black star) but today, although they have some releases befor US, they are way too expensive... i mean, average movie costs almost 20 pounds... and of course, they have around 200 titles only vs. 400 on amazon...

is it coincidence your nick is GANDley?

it seems logical. This title is not yet released in EU, while Pirates were simultanuously. thx

Will the studios eventually release region B versions of the DVD's locked to region A, or is the region B market not worth the effort?

yes paidgeek has said that with with some title(s) that this is the only reason why studios use region coding know

Depends on the studio, best to ask the studio in question honestly.

They can give you a better answer as to the why and possible when or if someone else holds the rights who'd you'd need to ask.
