You might want to use some discretion regarding the number of polls you've created.......

A dog is the best deterrant. A thief randomly looking for a house to break in is not going to know if you have a gun or not. IF they are scoping a house and they see a dog, they will just move onto another house that won't have a dog. If you have something specific they want, that is a different story-they will do something to take the dog out.

A home invasion is entirely different than a burglary, for the record. Burglaries can and do occurr when the resident is home or away, and is initiated strictly a crime of theft. A Home Invasion may not be a burglarly, it could be a rape, murder, kidnapping or some other reason...although it could include burglary.

Perhaps you simply misread the definition of home invasion and burglarly and don't comrehend the distinction?

An alarm system (Brinks, ADT, etc) is most effective. But it's nice to have a gun in the house for when you're home.

How is having a gun in your home going to prevent someone from entering your home?

You a lot of you are missing the point. Its not whats the best protection after the thief is in the home, but before the thief enters.

You make a good point. Other than fortified doors and windows there isn't a lot you can do to prevent someone from entering your home. A sign or sticker will prevent a break in the same way a "No Guns" sign keeps guns out of schools. It will make some folks think twice, but the determined type are going to do what they're going to do.

Now, if someone does come in despite the alarm or signs and you or your family are home what good is an ADT operator on the phone going to do at that moment? I'd prefer not to die helplessly knowing that the police will arrive in time to get the paperwork filed quickly.

If they break in when I'm not home, then help yourself and I'll make a list for my insurance agent.

I think it was on that show on Discovery channel, where they have the ex-thief guy break into houses that he explained some of the things that would-be-burglar's look for.

If a house has ADT or something like that, there's no reason to bother messing with that house if the one next door doesn't have it.

Unless you have something really valuable within view of one of your windows, in which case a determined thief will find a way to work around your alarm.

In general, if you can make $6 with a lot of effort, or $5 with minimal effort, which do you think people would do?

Burglar's aren't always idiots, and will likely try to put the odds in their favor any way they can.

~~~~~~~
That being said, back in December, a few days before Christmas, I was getting ready to leave town to go visit relatives. My neighbor called to tell me that she woke up because the dog was barking, so she went downstairs and saw some young guy trying to open one of her windows from outside. When he noticed her, he asked if she wanted him to shovel the snow in her driveway, to which she said no.
When he left, she noticed he didn't even have a shovel.
So the genius that he is, he moved on to the next house, another neighbor I know, but this time he went up to their front door, and asked about the snow/shovel thing again, and they turned him down.
So then he went to the next house, but instead of going to the front door, went around to the back of the house. At this point, my neighbor had been spying on him, and noticed he didn't re-appear from the back of the house after a few minutes.
She called the police, they showed up, found a broken window in the back of the house, and minutes later found him hiding inside.
What I noticed is that he only seemed to approach houses that didn't have cars in the driveway, because he skipped right over my house.
My two neighbors park their cars in their garage, whereas I don't. The house he broke into had no car there, because the person was away for Christmas.
I voted "Other" because there's this thing we're getting put on the door, which helps prevent people from kicking it in by displacing the energy of the kick throughout the entire door as opposed to just around the lock.
How much does it cost to install one of those alarm systems? And, what is the monthly charge for the service? (Just out of curiosity, I have always wondered. I've lived in a townhouse complex since getting out of college)
Check out the ADT and Brinks websites, I'm sure the prices for their different packages are pretty easy to find.
Its about $500+ for an install, and most plans are around $30-50 per month.
Depends on your area though, not only as to what's available but cost per month. I've heard VERY bad things about ADT. That's where the BTK killer worked, but most of what I've heard about ADT is due to response time and service being lousy.
