The quality of the sound will only be as good as your speakers.....if your speakers are part of the Onkyo Htib, then this could very well limit the range of sound you are hearing, and I bet this is the main reason you are dissappointed in what you hear.

EDIT: Blujacket you posted seconds before me......

This thread is misleading. The title says one thing and his post says another.

Between HD and non HD you would have to be deaf not to hear a difference.

Dolby and DTS go about the same thing two different ways in HD, but the sound should be the same or thereabouts.

If your thinking that because on DVD DTS was better, thats because it was a higher bitrate on DVD. On bluray the bitrates should be similar so the two formats are much closer this time around than they were on DVD.

That's because you read it wrong. The OP said he can't tell the difference between TrueHD/DTS-HD and regular 5.1. This is not a Dolby VS. DTS thread.

Don't feel bad op. Any discernable difference I may pinpoint isn't like night and day to me. I think the most noticeable different I perceived was during the title scene of V For Vendetta; when the V was being drawn there's a sharp zinging noise and that sounded really sharp. Also, I've noticed the difference seems more prominent the louder you crank your system.

Other than that to me it sounds like CD vs SACD. I just couldn't pinpoint too much of a difference. I'm sure there are some folks that can but remember everyone is different.

For reference I have the following:

Denon 3808CI receiver
Infinity Alpha 50's fronts
Infinity Beta C360 center
Infinity Beta ES250's 3 rears 6.1
SVS sub
PS3 bluray for playback

So I think pretty decent. The PS3 decodes to linear PCM. I'm sure with much more expensive speakers I'd notice a bigger difference but I got what I got.

This is what I was thinking. I was originally using Onkyo HTiB speakers (probably the exact same ones), but when I upgraded to my current speakers, the difference was like night and day.
