So please explain why LOTR EE’s can’t be put on 1 disc each. The video and audio Quality would look and sound just as good as it does now.
It may not seem like a lot but if you analyze the bd's for Godfather II vs Fellowship EE, Fellowship is about 25 min longer. Godfather II basically maxes out a 50GB disc at nearly 48GB. Fellowship altogether is about 65GB and thus has to be spread across two discs. Godfather II looks fantastic on disc and it's possible that Fellowship could be compressed a good bit more to fit on one disc but at that point they'd be pushing it. As for TV shows, they compress the hell out of those episodes to fit on disc if they are putting that many on one disc. Look at HBO shows and they usually max out at 3 1-hour eps on one disc which is pretty close to what appears to be the safe limit. I will admit that it would be great to have them all on single discs but I'd rather them not over-compress the image. That's my two-cents.

Jackson is rather ambiguous in what he means in that video. Besides it just seems like a promotional fluff piece, nothing remotely close to talking indepth about the restoration.

But he clearly states it's not about making the films different, and that it feels like a modern film. Which, to me, means the 4K and HDR have made it seem newer.

But James has seen the screenshots. He knows these restorations inside and out.

Shorter film have been released theatrically with an intermission - so what's the big deal of splitting up between discs? Really. It's just another reason to complain.

This is irrelevant. They could smash ten hours of content on one disc if they felt like it. That isn’t the point. Compression and quality is the point.

That’s...not how studios set pricing. Warner could’ve just as easily released the theatrical versions first (as they’ve done in the past), charged the same amount, and people would still have bought these films in 4K. If anything, this set is UNDER-priced for Warner when you consider the price of a lot of their other one-off 4K titles.

Again, it’s not that they COULDN’T have technically been put on one disc. But could’ve and should’ve are not the same thing. LOTR is not some TV release where, as in FAR too many cases, compression and quality is indeed sacrificed for disc real-estate. This is one of Warner’s Crown Jewels and they know it. I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but it actually costs the studio more money to press more discs. If there was zero trade-off to just keeping the extendeds to a single disc each, it makes absolutely no sense for them to have chosen to split them apart. Again, that’s not how studios set pricing. It’s a quality consideration, period.

(realizes he’s just been logic’ing to a person who believes you can reduce file size down from two to one disc and retain 100% quality, regrets entire reply)

I finally went to two local Targets and simply bought the standard version instead (of which they had several of each set.)

I suspected the steelbooks might be a tough find but am shocked that almost no one seemed to have the standard versions on release day.
I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me. It's gotten to the point where I don't want steelbooks anymore. They're just too darn fragile. I've even tried ISPU, but even then, more than half of the stock is damaged in some way. I've honestly given up on steelbooks at this point. The hassle is just not worth the reward.

I have another hour of work before I get home and my wife is teasing me with photos of the package that arrived this morning. Today feels like Christmas.
