Just saw that weird hair in the Balin’s Tomb sequence. Jesus, there’s no unseeing that. Ugh. You’d think with all the tinkering they apparently did, they’d have caught that.
Not a huge fan of the colors either. True, they got rid of the green tint, but the film looks more desaturated than I’ve ever seen on home video before. |

Definitely concerned by all these reports about "grain management" on these flicks. I detest the grain-free digital look -- and I say that as a cinematographer forced to shoot most things these days with a grain-free digital look! Literally one of my mantras over the years has been: "thank god LORD OF THE RINGS was shot before the age of digital cameras; I can't imagine it without the gorgeous organic grain."
Now of course I'm gonna buy the thing and see it for myself; it's friggin' LORD OF THE RINGS, after all. One does not simply walk into Mordor, and one does not NOT buy what could be the best presentation of LORD OF THE RINGS. But if the grain is too absent to my eyes, then this becomes a "4K option" sitting dormant on the shelf while I go back to watching my quite-lovely EE Blu-rays -- which I heavily HEAVILY color correct myself in-projector, so you can take the low-white-point and green-tint out of the mix. Fingers crossed the grain plays better to my eyes than the reports may indicate. I remain optimistic. |

I watched an unboxing of this (I rarely do), and I think the box itself is gorgeous. 5 years ago it would have been a fingerprint magnet, love that they went with a matte finish

I remember seeing all three in theaters and I vaguely remember a digitally finished or "waxy" look (I can't think of a better term) on the characters and thinking it was different at the time. This was before all digital projectors, so I'm assuming this was just how they finished some scenes originally. The scenes with elves come to mind. It seems more pronounced than the blu-ray version when watching in 4K.

Hey all!
Was just wondering if anyone encountered a similar potential issue that I did with the fellowship of the ring 4k theatrical disc. On the main menu, the clips of the movie look great, as I expected the release would be, with vibrant colors and good detail. However when I play the actual movie, there seems to be far less detail and the image is a lot darker, so maybe crush. I’m on a Samsung Q60r tv with a Samsung 4k blu ray player, which ik aren’t the best possible options but I’ve got them set pretty well I think and I usually enjoy the image I get. I also don’t understand how it’d be a problem with my tv or player settings since the settings don’t change between the footage playing on the menu and the actual movie playing. If anyone else has experienced this or knows why this might be it’d be greatly appreciated Thanks! |

Just glanced the streams. HDR is making a noticeable difference resulting is significantly lesser blown out highlights and expansion of highlights.
Return of the King - where they walk through the forest with the sun rays piercing through the trees. On the BD, it is a blown out mess whilst here you see the background and foliage clearly. Besides that some scenes look like a 1080p upscale. Some scenes have that soft DNR'ed look. Doesn't feel like love at first sight to me. Will buy the discs when they become cheap. |

People are genuinely interested in the availability of this release. I'm not sure that the same can be said of "cool story bro" style responses.
If you're honestly not interested in people's surprisingly difficult experience finding even the standard versions of these films, perhaps you're simply in the wrong thread. |
