The dual-format Persona had a big booklet, over 50 pages, that might get dropped from a Blu-ray only release

I suspect many of us here on the forum are familiar with TSPDT, but I would second mrjohnnyb's recommendation...it's a fantastic site for cinephiles.

One thing I've noticed is that Bill G seems to have eliminated all of the commenting on the site...but I didn't see any explanations of that decision. I had always found a lot of interesting discussion in the comment sections so I'm sad to see them gone - does anyone have any insight about that change? Very sad if it was simply due to the levels of incivility and vitriol we see everywhere on the internet these days.

Have Criterion ever dropped or edited booklets in the past?

I don’t see them dropping the booklet.

I assume it’ll be a smaller DigiPack release.

Picnic at Hanging Rock Blu-ray dropped the novel that was included with the dual format release and A Hard Day's Night Blu-ray only edition included in the Rock Box gift set had a slimmed down booklet compared to the massive booklet included in the dual format release.

In any case, you once again said it all for me in your review of OTHELLO. I managed to see it on the theatrical release in the 1990's and I remember being so blown away by it, when I was walking home from the theater in Hollywood I actually started off in the wrong direction, my mind was so preoccupied with Welles' visions. I not only think it the best version of OTHELLO I've ever seen (including seeing Placido Domingo live in OTELLO), but arguably my favorite Shakespeare film adaptation of all time. Welles just never ever fails to shock and awe me.

Meanwhile, should I put out your smoking jacket and slippers for later, sir?
Please don't forget the most important part, sir: the ASCOT

Looking forward to Criterion releasing this, which seems a no-brainer given how much of Assayas' stuff they have out already (including one this April). I blind-bought the Palm Pictures DVD 15 or so years ago, and was mesmerized as I was again recently in revisiting it.

It was the same as the original release. Summer Interlude, Autumn Sonata, and Cries & Whispers were the other updated transfers and Fanny & Alexander had some color adjustments in certain places, diminishing the red cast some of the older Bergman Blu masters had (the original Cries & Whispers was also like that.)

I used the Target Circle offer to pick up a few Criterions. All around the price at the B&N sale.

I got:

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Desert Hearts
Othello

Being a fellow Noir enthusiast and collector, it really helps to be region free. It’s always nice to have options when buying a film. Eureka’s Masters of Cinema line, among others, has some beautiful releases. Powerhouse Films (Indicator Series) have two boxed sets of Noir classics from Columbia. The second set has a street date in the UK of February 15th. They do free tracked international shipping on orders over £200 (which comes out to the neighborhood of $250 + USD). Eureka, last I checked, still have free international shipping.

Mid February, I’ll be placing a sizable order with both those boxed sets. Can’t wait to check them out.

We’re getting closer to where the Flash Sale could pop on any coming Tuesday.

As far back as my records go from my previous orders, the Spring Flash Sale dates have been:

February 25, 2020
March 5, 2019
February 13, 2018
February 28, 2017
February 23, 2016

This is going to be an incredible expensive few months.

At current exchange rates £200 is approximately US$274.

Ah, that was a typo. My bad. Thanks for pointing it out. Damned iPhone keypad. I meant for that to be $250.

The exchange rate is the highest it’s been since late April 2018. It’s 1.37 USD per GBP, so £200 is $273.50 right now. Ouchie.

I preordered the Noir sets for the discount on the second one, but when they removed VAT it actually got cheaper. I lost $10 in the currency conversion though, due to the pound having dropped relative to the Aussie dollar in the interim.

Ace in the Hole needs to be bumped up a few hundred spots, at least. Hopefully Sight & Sound can make it happen next year.

Lists are nice to spotlight films for new generations, but I never understood ranking art. I prefer they just published these kinds of lists in alphabetical/chronological order

Oh, I am definitely region free, so that isn't a problem when trying to complete my collection. It's just that some of them don't have a blu release anywhere. I own the first Noir set from Indicator and have the second on preorder through DiabolikDVD. Their $5 flat shipping rate trumps any markup in price they may add to import releases from Region B (they are based out of the Philly area). I will still order direct from Eureka, however. Free international shipping is hard to top!
