Default Basement Home Theater Install

I am new to this board (although I have been a lurker for a while) and since I have not really introduced myself to anyone I thought this thread would be a good place to start. I have all my equipment listed in my signature along with a link to all the photo's in a photobucket gallery.

Looks great. Simple and clean. Very nice. How do you like the A3-300? I have been curious about it.

so far the A3-300 has been a very nice upgrade from an old JBL 12" sub I had. The room my home theater is in (basement) is pretty big so I may consider adding another A3-300 down the road and stacking it on top of my existing A3-300.

But the sub definitely cranks. My basement is 17x37 and that sub still does a great job!

I hope you don't mean that in the literal sense....

you mean the stacking part? Well I did mean that literally, but to be honest I had not really investigated whether or not that is actually a good idea. Judging from your response I am guessing it is NOT a good idea to stack Sub Woofers? I thought I had seen some installations where this had been done. If that is not recommended then I guess I would need to rethink things.

Wow, nice set-up! For that Sized room, I'd be looking at or thinking about a Projector & 120" Screen - But, I do love a nice pool table as well.

Yes, I would def. agree with his intended (I believe) statement of Not stacking the subs. In that size room, you can put a 2nd one along the side maybe (of the primary seating area perhaps/behind the couch near the wall), or on the left side if the space works for it. I'd send a PM to "BIG DADDY" or "DRIVER KING" here for links to Subwoofer placement - i'm sure they can direct you to better ideas of Sub# 2.

Either way, very nice job, very clean. Welcome to the site!

Very nice set-up. I see you took your time and did things right the first time. Nice equipment and you have the mother of the beast for a sub, the A3-300, that's very nice indeed.

I do have one question. You have the same issue I have in that you used the 1/2 of your basement as your HT "area" and the other 1/2 for your pool table. My other 1/2 is for my kids toys and such, and I was wondering what you thought about the quality of the sound you get since you have the additional room/space behind you. I felt I needed 2 subs (much smaller and lesser performing subs than yours, but also a smaller room) to at least have the bass fill my HT "area." Do you think your speakers are performing and sound the way they should or do you think they are lacking something with no wall behind your couch. I have always wondered if I am really missing something without a wall behind me and haven't seen another set-up similiar to mine in this way until i saw yours.

What's your 2 cents?

To be honest I think it sounds amazing. I still get plenty of chest thumping bass from my sub and the couch and ottoman in the middle of my HT also shake when ever there is some good low bass. It also helps that my fronts have 4 10" drivers and I am getting a lot of good mid-bass from those. That might be where my situation varies from others.

Good to know. My fronts consist of a total of 6 5-1/4" drivers, so I would hope we may be a bit closer in the sound I am getting from them than you might think. I just couldn't help but think that the space or void is taking something away, but if I'm happy and you're happy, then thats all that matters. Thanks and again, great set-up!

So last week I played with subwoofer placement a bit. I am somewhat limited in my choices since my wall unit really takes up most of the space on that wall. In any case I ended up pulling the sub out from the corner a bit and angling it so it face the chase portion of my couch. This added a slightly higher output and cleaner bass (in the MAIN seating position on the couch). I also noticed I get a little more couch rumble from this position which maybe is what is giving me the feeling of higher output. Overall when an explosion hits I feel it more now and I even get slightly less rattle from my Recessed light cans and air vents in the ceiling. Although my windows still vibrate on really low rumbling bass scenes.

I will take updated pictures when I get a chance.

Alright, I would like some recommendations from everyone!

First, should I put all the GRILL's on my speakers in the front sound stage or do you guys prefer the appearance of all the speakers without grill's? My surrounds I want to keep the grill's on because they are In-Wall/In-Cieling.

Second, I realize my walls are pretty bland. Do you guys think Movie posters would look good in my setup on the wall's? Or should I consider WAF and let her decorate the wall's a bit more? Maybe put a layer of DARKER paint on the wall where the HT is?

Third, should I consider upgrading my MAIN's because of WAF? I mean I LOVE my KG5.5 and I have had then for over 14 years now but they are have an OAK veneer and do not really match anything in my HT. But they sound fantastic! I think that is all that should matter. I have thought about painting them black but I am not sure what type of paint to use and if I would need to sand them first??? Not sure.

You could always find movie posters and some things your wife could add to put on the wall that may have a color that matches your front speakers/entertainment center to bring it all together? That way the color of your entertainment center, speakers and what you call your bland walls would all work together and make the area around your HT look a lot more aesthetically pleasing?

Crypter,

IMO:

1. Darker color on the walls with in-wall speaker grills painted to match
2. Remove the "bridge" piece on top of the entertainment center
3. Grills off if you don't have pets
4. One more "yellow-ish" accent piece, maybe a poster, to tie in the speaker color.
