I've had to correct this many times; Blu-ray is not proprietary, it is an open format like CD and DVD, which like Blu-ray, Sony co-invented, but did not make entirely on their own.

You'll find info on other BDA members on this site here.

You get what you pay for. Besides, I would not mind the year end clearance price if it means having this years technology next year.

I am still a big fan of Panasonic, but right now I only trust Sony blu-ray players and will most likely stay with for new TV's - at least for big TV's to go with my blu-ray players.

I have a mild apprehension over the quality of my Sony S300 player, but I know firmware is going to make it better. I LOVE firmware updates, it's almost like getting a new one. I can't wait for version 2.x.

I get a kick out of updates of any sort. I love seeing how the existing technology can be tweaked and maxed out. Elegance of design over brute force. That's how I like it.

Sony is huge and involved in so much. There is no way a company can be that big without creating ill will from some consumers. If someone is happy with 10 Sony products and unhappy with the 11th, that means someone is going to whine and complain and blame Sony. Sony makes some good products, Sony makes some bad products, Sony makes some good business decisions, and Sony makes some bad business decisions. Bottom line, Sony is in a difficult position financially right now if neither the PS3 or Blu-ray do better than is expected. I am impartial and always consider Sony hardware products, but rarely purchase them now as I rarely find Sony offers the best vaule for my needs. Software is another matter and I own a lot of Sony music, Columbia and other labels.

I imagine if you were part of the HD-DUD crowd, you would probably hate Sony.

Sony used to dictate to any retail operation, what that store had to stock and display. While that's not unusual in the industry, what was at the time, was that Sony demanded all SKU's be stocked and displayed or the retailer would lose the contract to sell - even if a store can't sell certain things. For myself, I remember a 350.00 Emerson HiFi VCR outlasting 4 1500.00 Sony HiFi VCR's. Plus their Laserdisc players had half the detail in the PQ of most others and they had a lot of bugs.

What Sony WAS good for, was support in parts etc. but in the Pro Division, 3/4" Betacam products were ordered by Sony, to be smashed instead of supported and fixed so they could sell new equipment. I was in the industry back then as a video editor in L.A. so that's how I know.

I wouldn't call their electronics products 'top of the line' -I'd say 'top of the line available at WalMart' maybe.

Their products are generally more dependable and better quality than other competitors in their price points. Some of the higher end products I think are a bit overpriced, but they generally offer unique style or options.

They do show innovation. I love their VAIO computers. Their Bravia XBR LCD TV's are cool. The Walkman mainstreamed personal music. Each generation of the PS was as good as it got for console gaming. For a long time Sony has had 'the product' that alot of people wanted.

Both the PS2 and PS3 were huge bargains considering you got the latest DVD technology and a gaming console. As cool as the PS2 was - the PS3 is just so much cooler.

Not sure why people would want to hate Sony. They are one of the few companies that has consistently delivered breakthru electronic products to consumers.

I work for a luxury line vehicle dealership and the answer is simple - you get what you pay for!

You want cheap - then that's what you get in price and in quality.

You want something better - you pay more, and you should pay more.

But remember, almost everything can be negotiated - you would be surprised at the price you can get some of the newest Sony equipment for if you spent some time building a relationship with the store manager and don't be abusive/unrealistic when asking for a deal. It takes some time but it works.

MS has a rootkit called WGA. Their servers go down so does your business and home computer. A rose by any other name...

The top of line from SONY is for sure near top of line electronics out ther, dont know what kinda top of line products u r considering while u writing this, did u also include things u'll never seen anywhere in the world but Japan? I dont think so.... and plus, there is always Qualia (even thos it's dropped now), my point is SONY proven itself has the best in the industry and if u can afford it they will blow you away.

again, the real SONY is for people who have real money or people who just love quality electronics. so consider the real (top of the line, expensive) SONY is Pagani Zonda in car, not many people can afford the real stuff, but if u can, no one complain. simple as that!!!

People are always saying "SONY is copying stuff... blabla"
but it seems like... they put the ideas together and create the best they can do...

actually since the PS3 is out, (and i got my free Blu-ray Disc from them )
..SONY made a big "+" point.

I like them now... a litte expensive, but still quality ^^

Fortunately, things have turned around over the last several years and Sony is again towards the top in high quality/high value.

And like it's been mentioned, anyone who dominates an industry has a marker on their head. Does Sony do no wrong? Absolutely not. Many people are also lashing out because the PS3 is priced out of their range. They want the system, they want the games that are coming but some don't feel that blu-ray is necessary for their gaming. Sony sees differently. This is why some people talk about Sony 'shoving blu-ray down people's throats'.
Sony does have a long history of loosing format wars. but the PS3 & blu's bigger bit bucket wins this time. i'll take the bate.

I'd like to answer your question, but I, in my personal experience, don't find any reason to dislike Sony and can't help you there. I love how they're one of the first companies to stop or plan to stop using harmful chemicals and materials in their products such as flame retardants and lead solders, and so on. Keeps people and the environment healthy. But if I must nitpick and find a fault, I'd say that most of their products have been taking too much of my time and money.

I think your question is very loaded though. We'd have to first prove that everyone does hate Sony before we can start answering that question, but there's no proof. I haven't seen any statistics. And i have a feeling people worlwide hate the behavior of xbot fanboys more than than anything else, let alone Sony.

They still do that to a certain extent. They march in with a mandatory list of things that must be on display or you can't carry any of it. This is why you see great TVs mixed in with $35/pr speakers.

Operative word "WAS". Closing service centers doesn't help. Also, removing the ability of local servicers to repair most of their items (requiring a send-back) put a bad taste in people's mouths.

Having said that, with a company that has as many products in the field as Sony, their failure rate is really quite low. For some reason, they are perceived (outside of video) as a low-end company.

Wow, now THAT was a gem of colossal ignorance. So, MS, Toshiba and Paramount are evil and greedy. Sony, on the other hand, is not greedy and never does anything evil. Wow. Thanks for educating me on this.

People hate Sony because they know BD is better and the majority are 360 owners. Actually I can afford a PS3, I just haven't come up with a compelling reason to part with my money for it yet. Yes, I bought the HD DVD for the 360. I'm out $200 for it. If HD DVD loses and goes away, then I figure I'm out $200 plus the cost of a few discs I bought for it. What are YOU out if BD loses?

If and when BD wins, I'll probably buy a PS3. Until then, I haven't put much money at risk and I don't mind waiting it out. As to BD being better. How are you enjoying the picture-in-picture blue screen commentary on 300 in Blu-Ray? Oh wait, that's right..you're not. Then there's the supposed higher picture quality that some people claim should be there, but no one seems to be able to demonstrate that in side by side comparisons.

This isn't about what format is better. This is all about making your choice and defending it to the bitter end. You chose Blu-Ray, good for you. Your vote has been recorded in the next-gen format war. But this Blu-Ray jihad is just hilarious to read. Keep it up guys. You put a smile on my face every day.

Why do people hate Sony?

Mostly, because Sony has great products but most people are of the mentality of "cost less"(they want cheaper items).
TOL Sony items are *NOT* cheap!

I have three(3) VAIO laptops - all of them were TOL at time of purchase - respectively.
Yeah, I destroyed my wallet buying them(each time). OH WELL!
I still think I made out!

No coupons, no discount codes... go to store and buy them!
Guess what? They have all kinds of neat stuff factory installed!
Bluetooth(2), IntelPRO wireless(2), REAL video cards(mobile) with dedicated RAM(all 3) - this one is BD from factory(the original BD laptop BTW!)... LOTS more, but too much to list here.

Yeah... I suppose you could say that I "like" Sony.
LOL!
