Because you don't need an extensive history of Star Trek movies, TOS, TNG, etc, and more etc, to follow this movie it will bring in a bunch of fans that Star Trek XVI wouldn't have.
My wife wants to see it because she doesn't know anything about Star Trek history and thinks this is a great chance to see a movie without feeling like she's way behind the curve. 89 million opening weekend, angry trekkies be darned. |

i don't know. i'd have to guess $50-60 million though. the star trek films never were really big sellers at the box office. the fourth film did the best out of the first six, but they never did outstanding business. i can't really see this one being any bigger. i can't see it doing wolverine or fast and furious numbers.

As a big Trek fan and while I'd love to see a massive weekend, i only predict about $55-60 million. Movies are doing well this year so that will help, but Trek does have a nerdy rep. to overcome.
Its opening weekend could be similiar to the first Jason Bourne movie. Open decent and hope positive word-of-mouth keeps business steady for about a month to prevent a huge decline each week. Then, when it comes out on BR/DVD the film will find a wider audience of people who heard good reviews but only want to rent it. The next movie should have a bigger opening weekend audience, again like the Bourne series. |

this movie will never make $410 million in the us. none of the star treks have made it past $130 million in the u.s. alone. none! star trek doesn't have that kind of box office power.

This ain't yo daddy's Star Trek. After the whale movie they had a following of strictly star trek/sci-fi fans. With the reboot they can pick up all action fans, and if word of mouth takes off they can pick up a very wide base. |

I voted for "over 90 million". Even though a lot of Star Trek fans may have reservations about it, I think it may still do very well. I'm a big Star Trek fan and I'm planning on seeing this movie with the hope that they do the film right and revive the franchise.
The main reason that I think it will do well is because of the buzz from non-fans. The casual film goer seem to be up for this movie from the preview trailers. This is usually good for a genre/franchise specific film because if it's done well, word-of-mouth will drive its success. From what I've seen of the trailer, it does look like it might be worthwhile. One main complaint that I have so far is that the Enterprise looks a little bit lame. It's almost like the designer couldn't make up his mind what ship to create. It looks like parts being slapped together. |
