Granted, some people try to graft the Bible onto any movie (ET, Star Wars, etc), but based on his background, I think it's pretty clear what Tolkien's intent was.
nope wasn't being sarcastic, i really hadnt heard that mentioned before

i've never read the books, or anything else about the stories except things related to the movies and never had run across someone saying that

When exactly does ST open? Midnight tonight? Or has it already opened?
Yeah, it's the WWII references he didn't like, although that can clearly be read in it as well. But does he refer to it? I'm not religious, so it clearly didn't register to me.

Jason does a great job updating his threads, and I am looking foward to the initial estimates. I was going to go tonight, but my son has tons of homework to do. I will have to wait until tomorrow.

Based on the fanbase of Star Trek over the past 43 years, a lot of people will go see it; fans of new and old. The movie may easily make close to $100 mil. opening weekend.

Bought 4 tickets for the Friday afternoon screening for myself and my roommates 2 weeks before opening... I think it will do $90+ million!

Well next time you use your communicator sorry I mean cell phone you can thank the "nerd" who watched TOS and was inspired by it. Along with all the other "nerds" who watched it and grew up to be doctors and scientists and astronauts.

it wasn't meant as a slight. i literally couldn't find anyone to go see this movie with me because its "star trek". your average moviegoer thinks the same thing.

and i have a hard time buying star trek is the reason for cell phones but i get what you mean

These crazy Star Trek fans always get so defensive.

I don't think Star Trek had anything to do with cell phones. I'm pretty sure phones were around first, and it was obviously only a matter of time before they became portable.

And for every Star Trek fan that goes on to become a doctor, there is at least one that goes on to work at a video store.

Anyhow, I agree with xtop. I think the perceived nerdiness might keep some people away. If they hear good things about it (and by good, I mean "no, this isn't nerdy at all, it's great"), then the movie might have a good 2nd week.

There are tons of guys who probably think Wolverine is awesome, and their girlfriends think Hugh Jackman is a stud, so I'm not surprised Wolverine did well. Good luck getting a girl to see Star Trek... or admitting to a girl you want to see it.

I'm assuming this will be the best of Star Treks and will be underrated.

Not really....if the girl respects you, she won't (much) question your preferences. Before I got married I watched a bunch of Trek movies in the theater with different girlfriends and there were no complaints. I am watching this one with my wife, and my son.

Really? Nice. My wife could care less about Star Trek. But, she expects me to watch her dumb reality shows and HGTV with her....

Well, there's a Brazilian soap opera that I watch (I watch pieces of it, and she watches the entire thing) with my wife. I just did it at my first cause she kept calling me over, but now I don't mind it.

So the question is, will you go see it again? That's where it makes it's money.

Yes

My sister said she wants to go see it again also- that NEVER happens.

Great acting
Great visuals
Smooth pace, and characters that draw you in.
Sound was as good as can be pumped out at a regular theater. (but on blu! )

Gonna be one sweet blu!

That's why this movie is going to make bank (eventually if not right away). A good (well made) story works every time.

I had to talk my wife out of going to the Thursday shows...we're going Sunday. She loves Trek. Good on you, mate, with the stereotypes.
