Universal is releasing Howard the Duck of all things on UHD and Paramount apparently can't be bothered to remaster the Trek films other than Khan. Very strange state of affairs in the home video world these days.

I don't think that it's so much that Shatner doesn't care as it is he's being realistic and speaks from experience. The fact is that the people running the Star Trek IP today are not the same ones running it from 30 or even 20 years ago. The IP is dying and not what it once was and ViacomCBS stock has seen better days. The whole company is in panic mode and no one over there seems to know what to do with Star Trek except insult more and more of the old fans. Certainly not adding very many new fans, not like the days of TOS reruns and TNG.

In the case of Shatner, it wasn't that long ago he tried to copy the success of the Richard Donner cut of Superman II with his cut of Star Trek V, and was as I have heard it, laughed out of Paramount Home Video. Shatner was keeping a hand on this franchise with his Kirk books, until they canceled them because of the first JJ Trek film. On that note, Shatner tried to get a role in the reboot films, and they never let him do it. Time after time in the last about 15 years, they keep cutting him off. Why after those experiences would he feel the need to "push like hell even when it's unlikely?" He has no say on what they do with this IP, and they clearly have no interest in his say based on recent history.

Now, that said, you do point out correctly that Paramount seems to have a new push for physical media as of late. I'm still holding out hope that TMP director's cut might come to Blu-ray via their "Paramount Presents" series. I could easily see that being a thing. As for 4K releases of the original ten films? I mean, never say never. Realistically, if it happened, expect it to be somewhat bare bones and strictly theatrical versions of all ten films. I really don't see them going all out for vintage Star Trek anymore, as much as I wish they would. I would LOVE to see a disc with director's cuts or extended cuts of all ten films. And, while so far I have not gotten into 4K discs, such a release might be the thing to get me to change my mind on the format. But I'm also praying for DS9 and Voyager on Blu-ray, so there you go.

The Trek movies are some of the most consistent sellers in Paramount's entire catalog. Clearly they are waiting for whatever next movie comes about to bring them out on 4K UHD, though if it continues to take forever to make that picture happen, they may as well just crank them out as they have all the Mission Impossible and Jack Ryan movies. That's a "when" situation, not an "if".

And we are far more likely to get those movies in 4K than Blu-Ray editions of DS9 and Voyager. That's very likely not happening based on the sales of TNG in the format not to mention the expense of having to update those series for HD. You can basically forget about that at this point.

I agree, the original ten films on 4K is more likely than DS9 or Voyager on Blu-ray. Never said it wasn't. Keeping up with the news, I don't see a new movie coming out anytime soon, so who knows when that might be?

Yes, exactly! Shatner has had a long history trying to get his version of Star Trek V out there. I suspect he's given up and at 90 years of age, that might be the ball game sadly unless someone at Paramount has a smart idea and quickly!

I'd be all over a set of 10x theatrical cuts on UHD like a rash. And no fookin Atmos remixes either. But to me it's not a question of if but when they get remastered (Khan aside which was done in 4K HDR a while ago) as Paramount have lavished new transfers on pretty much all of their key franchises, even Indy is coming up.

The wrinkle is that there's 9 entire films to remaster (and I wouldn't say no to a properly compressed re-release of ST '09 on UHD with a Dolby Vision pass) which is quite an undertaking. It's nothing horrendously complicated, it'll just take a bunch of time and money to do 9 4K restorations and Par seem to be waiting for another tie-in opportunity to come along, preferably a new film as they didn't seem interested in releasing the TNG movies to cash in on Picard. Hard to believe that Beyond is already five years old.

But with no new movie anywhere near production and Par not interested in celebrating Trek's 65th anniversary - aside from the usual weak-ass marketing platitudes, if that - then we're no nearer getting them on UHD.

I do own the remastered TWOK and TOS on blu, but i'm dug in as far as the other original series films getting the UHD treatment.

If it actually comes out will be another issue entirely. Remember when they announced a fourth JJ Trek film right before JJ Trek 3? Tarantino? They should do the TOS films and TNG separate as they did on dvd. Splitting them up could help to offset the cost of doing them all at once. Not to mention they all need new transfers outside of Khan-especially the TOS films 1, 3-6 which to me have unwatchable Blus. They’ll never go out of popularity and make money on streaming which is the impetus for any studio to remaster and restore these days.

TMP theatrical would be a stunner of a disc if done right showing off all those beautiful diopter shots. Andromeda Strain now has the beautiful Arrow disc so imagine a similar release for TMP...drooling...and with the Goldsmith score boy oh boy. There’s a reason why I swear by the theatrical letterbox LD paramount did on TMP. It was done last and a fresh transfer so it looks great for the format-but good grief the sound is without equal for that film and it’s not even discrete.

However it’s Trek so a fully loaded special edition on each title with multiple cuts will sell without question. It’s just a matter of convincing people. If Waterworld can get the full deluxe treatment the same can be done for Trek films.

I'm afraid the classic Star Trek movies might occupy an unfortunate spot in the eyes of the current caretakers at Paramount. They're technically part of an "active" franchise, but one they're never completely sure what to do with. Too high-tier to license out to an indie label, but too niche to spend much time and resources on themselves.

And I remember reading somewhere recently that the studio now considers Star Trek primarily a "TV franchise," so we may be waiting a while for the next feature film.

I find the current Blu-ray Disc to be the only home video version of TMP that I believe has ever come close to fully revealing its beautiful color palette. I think it also gives better representation of the diopter shots than any other version of TMP available for home video. (I do have the theatrical letterbox LD.) It's unfortunate that the BD suffers from excessive DNR.

As for the sound, I haven't had the LD Player hooked up in some time but it sounds like I need to revisit the LD for the audio. There's at least a couple of annoying issues with the 7.1 mix on the BD. TMP needs an audio treatment similar to Arrow's "The Last Starfighter" so the original Dolby 70mm 6-track mix (which I don't think has ever been heard outside of a handful of theaters) and the original two track Dolby Stereo SVA (which I'm assuming is the source for the LD) are both included. (However my preference would be for the 6-track mix to be presented as lossless 5.1 rather than the 4.1 that was used for Last Starfighter, simply for better compatibility with home audio equipment. It's really on Pioneer rather than Arrow in my case, but my home audio equipment has a limitation with a 4.1 source that it doesn't with 5.1.) Warner's 4k UHD disc of "Superman" is another wonderful example of an original 70mm 6-track mix brought back to life, although somewhat unfortunately with lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 rather than a lossless format.

Paramount needs to release these on 4K, just like Fox(Disney) needs to release The Planet of the Apes movies. Two huge franchise series begging to be released in this new format and both studios are doing nothing (or maybe they are slowly prepping them?).
