I still wish I'd gotten to see that in the cinema. I think Generations was my first Trek cinema experience.

What is even stranger is that if you go back to that scene where Kirk and Spock are the only two people left supposedly in the room having their contentious conversation there is clearly a female sitting in the background not fifteen feet away behind Kirk!
And guess what she is the very same aide-de-camp that told the assembled officers that there was no recording devices allowed. Everybody else leaves the meeting room but she stays sitting in her chair behind Kirk eavesdropping on their conversation.

Edit: I see that somebody has beat me to the punch on the mysterious woman hiding in the shadows behind Kirk! And for sure it is the same lady who is the aide to the CinC

I remember seeing that for the first time and it gave me goosebumps. And it still does. I think the selection of clips, editing, narration and use of music are all excellent.

Part VI would have been so much better if Saavik had been used instead of the Valeris character. As it is, Valeris is obviously the traitor, so that “reveal” is not as shocking as it would have been if a more familiar character was the turncoat.

I’ve heard that the screenplay was originally written with Saavik in that role, but Roddenberry vetoed it, because he didn’t like idea of one of the core characters going rogue.

I don’t buy the other explanation I’ve heard for the character switcheroo: that it was because Kirstie Alley wasn’t available to reprise the role (and Robin whasername was ruled out because of poor acting chops)—cuz they could just recast Saavik with Kim Cattrall.

That's often bugged me too! It could be a production mistake or the result of deleted scenes that may have explained it. Since Kirk says it shortly after Valeris's co-conspirators have left the room it's entirely possible that one of them was just eavesdropping .

For you less than eagle-eyed viewers there's someone sitting on a chair by the doors during the scene in silhouette. I always assumed it was Valeris.

Aside from being very ill if you read Shatner's Movies Memories (highly recommended) sounds like Roddenberry really had little influence with the films in general (aside from TMP). That's what I always heard. Meyer wanted to bring Kirstie Alley back but they couldn't afford her or she wasn't available. And they didn't want to use Robin Curtis because her version of saavik was so completely opposite what they wanted for the part. They wanted somebody who like in Wrath of Khan was clearly repressing emotions just under the surface. And they didn't want to recast the part with a third actress and totally baffle the audience. But they did want a younger character who was a Vulcan Protege of Spock

Yeah. Alley would have been right in the middle of her Cheers run and given ST 6's rushed schedule there's a pretty good chance she just wasn't available.

I can't remember if it is an extra or on the commentary for TUC but Meyer said Roddenberry didn't like the idea of Saavik being the traitor and that she wouldn't do something like this. And Meyer says that he told Roddenberry that he knew Savvik would do this because he created the character. But he relented in the end.

Still, there was a witness to the exchange between Kirk & Spock and "let them die!". She may have been working for Admiral Cartwright. As Valeris said, there were a lot of people on both sides who didn't want peace.

I've always loved this trailer myself. The first time I saw it was for the advertising of ST6. It was included in the collection of previews on the initial VHS release of Godfather III in 91. Excellent trailer.

I think there is a very similar trailer on the opening of the VHS that uses the imagery here but adds on the bits from the Next Generation. I will try and find on YouTube, my vhs is in a box in the garage somewhere I think ��
