Firmware updates should not take anymore then 15 minutes on a fast Internet connection. If the player has been locked up for several hours you will need to power cycle it. It is true that some brands and models of products that loose power during an update during flashing will need factory serviced unless they have the ability to store a backup firmware image.
Manufactories should make BLU-RAY players that automatically install updates around 3AM or another time set by the user. It would be ideal to have the BLU-RAY player automatically turn on once a week or once a month in the middle of the night and download the latest updates when the player is not being used.
