I totally believe it is Universal's fault, but if someone like you doesn't stand up for what you release, it's a lost fight right from the start isn't it? And for those of you who say that having those 3 sections in mono rather than the stereo they are supposed to be is no big issue, I am willing to bet this is not one of your favorite films, but each person I have seen make a comment like that, looking into their posting history, they sure have complained about the titles they love.

Universal should be repressing this and replacing it...and Kino should get behind its customers. That is what should have happened with Sweet Charity with the omission of the breaks for that "roadshow" release. There are 3 titles important to me from Universal, from the Kino deals. Sweet Charity was a big problem as the intermission and exit music were left off (yet advertised on the package). Now Millie's Overture, Intermission and exit music are in Mono. I wonder how Flower Drum Song will be screwed up.

I am sorry Kino but when a distributor like yours says "no reason to fix it." it says volumes about how much you really care for the people keeping you in business. I have had alot of respect for you and have over 400 of your titles, but my opinion of you just changed very much. You should be standing behind the film fans and at least try to force Universal to fix this problem.
Or you could say 'Thank you Kino for putting my three favorite movies of all time on blu-ray. Without you, I'd still be watching them on my crappy DVDs (but at least I could hear my intermissions). Thank you again for all your effort and I hope you sell the other 1199 copies of these movies '.

Not all releases are perfect. You get the hand you are dealt by higher authority.
Look at all of the Star Wars (A New Hope as an example) releases and they are still screwed up. But I buy them because they are my favorites and I want the best version of each even if they are not perfect.

Thanks for the humorous comment. On another note , I was serious , the actress, Kay Francis, is almost MIA on blu-ray to the exception of 2 only blu-rays (The Cocoanuts and Trouble in Paradise released in Spain only). Marlene Dietrich enjoyed releases from Criterion and Kino, I feel Kay Francis is as deserving if not more.

Coming November 16th!

Among the Living (1941)
• NEW Audio Commentary by Professor and Film Scholar Jason A. Ney
• Trailers
• Optional English Subtitles

B&W 69 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
Albert Dekker (Dr. Cyclops), Susan Hayward (Back Street), Harry Carey (The Shepherd of the Hills) and Frances Farmer (Come and Get It) star in this gripping cinematic blend of noir thrills and Southern Gothic chills. Paul Raden (Dekker) is a hopeless maniac. Twenty-five years ago, he suffered permanent brain damage trying to defend his mother from his brutal father. Paul’s last memory, before descending into the shadows of insanity, was his mother’s agonized scream. Locked away in secrecy ever since, he escapes from his prison on the night of his father’s funeral and stalks among the living. It’s up to Paul’s identical twin John (also Dekker) to put a stop to his brother’s vicious spree. Stuart Heisler (The Glass Key, Blue Skies) directed this eerie film noir with expressionistic black-and-white photography by Theodor Sparkuhl (Beau Geste, Wake Island) that perfectly complements its dark story of madness and murder.

Be glad KLI is even answering or posting anything at all. They could easily have gone silent. What other studio actually interacts and posts on this forum?

No studio is perfect and sometimes things are really out of their hand. You have to remember, there is a cost for everything. No idea how many they might have sold but I can think of their cost to recall and reprint for let's say 1000 would be not economical.

Most of her films are with studios we've never dealt with. We were interested in Girls About Town, but it was not legally cleared. I love Kay Francis as much as anyone, but she's not as popular as Dietrich, Lombard, Stanwyck...

Majority of the 20 films of her that are available to us, if legally cleared, are not big enough to release on their own and we haven't have the best of luck with our actor sets.

You do realize you're literally talking about music over a solid screen with no actual footage from the film missing, right?

Do you also complain when restoration credits are added to the end credits of a film since they aren't "original" to the film?

Yes, it's annoying, but kino is given what they are given. The fact that uni isn't releasing this themselves shows that they don't care about the property enough to go back and remaster it for an issue so mediocre as this.

A lot of films have been released in much poorer shape. Relax dude.

A Kay Francis set would probably serve Deanna Durbin numbers or less, you're right, but a few choice Kay titles (Ladies' Man with Lombard and Wm. Powell, 24 Hours with Miriam Hopkins, Strangers In Love with Fredric March) could be sprinkled throughout two or three volumes of a pre-code collection

Kay Francis is slowly but surely making her way up the ranking of my 100 favorite actresses. True, she likely won't rank as high as someone like Barbara Stanwyck and especially not Vivien Leigh (my #1) when all is said and done, but her talent is undeniable.
