Coming to Blu-ray 1/18 from The Film Detective

The Capture (1950)

From writer Niven Busch, the author of Duel in the Sun, comes an equally torrid sizzler, loaded with the intrigue and passion that marked the golden age of cinema. Cast with strong performers, this story of guilt and forbidden love still packs a jolt. Injured and on the run from police, Lin Vanner (Lew Ayres) confesses the sordid details of his life to a priest, which includes the death of a man he'd turned over to the police. Vanner also reveals that he fell in love with the dead man's widow (Teresa Wright), only to have his past catch up to him. Haunting and offbeat, The Capture (1950) was directed by one of Hollywood's best, John Sturges (The Great Escape).

Bonus Materials:
- Original Commentary track
- Original essay in full color booklet

(Not NOIR, but I think I might go for the forthcoming HARRY PALMER COLLECTION from Imprint as each movie is from a different studio and they may not be collected like this ever again. Plus the third movie in the series is currently OOP in the USA and the second one has extras on the Imprint edition, whereas the current Paramount Blu does not. Ok, sorry to go off topic!).
Do either of you (or anybody else) happen to know how often JB Hi-Hi has these B2G1 sales? I was about to bite the bullet and finally pick up some Imprint titles this weekend, but I appear to have missed the boat on this sale.

Fairly often. Three times a year, maybe. Though box sets usually aren't included and they often have their own 20-30% off sales, and those happen probably 2-3 times a year too.

In fact, they sometimes even have B1G1 sales. I picked up Sorry, Wrong Number and The Duellists during one of those.

While not an exact science JBs sales have a fairly predictable schedule next sale should be a 20% off starting 3/11 sometimes they issue extra 5% off coupons to people who have signed up to their newsletter so you may want to do that.

If you keep an eye on the Australia - Local BD Bargains thread you’ll be alerted when there’s a sale by members posts.

I would do some research on review of Imprint titles before purchasing. I didn't buy Sorry, Wrong Number and I married a Monster From Outer Space because of the poor transfers..

Are the two Imprint noir boxsets worth getting since they’re region free?

Yes, Sorry, Wrong Number is not a good transfer, but it's the best around and it's got some good, exclusive features that made the purchase worthwhile. Just curb your expectations for A/V quality

Well, it depends what other sets/releases you have. The first has Framed which is also in Indicator's Columbia Noir #2, Alias Nick Beal which was released later by Kino and The Garment Jungle which is in Indicator's Columbia Noir #1. The only exclusive it has right now as William Wyler's great Detective Story which has a decent transfer (but definitely an old DVD master) and is not available anywhere else.

As far as the second set is concerned, it has one unreleased title Plunder in the Sun, 2 titles that Olive releases barebones that are superior in releases in the Imprint set, and Hollywood Story which was released by Mill Creek in an inferior release.

Set #1 has the great titles, but most are available elsewhere in at least equal versions, but #2 has the best releases of its titles by far, but the titles themselves are fairly second rank titles. They're all good films, but they're not great films.

I’ll probably end up getting them because I don’t have the other releases, and don’t have a region free player for Inducator’s Columbia Noir sets. Mill Creek’s Hollywood Story is a double feature with New Orleans Confidential, which is also on their Noir Archive Vol. 2, and Kino didn’t include Alias Nick Beal in their noir sets, so there’s no double dipping as of now.

Yeah, aside from the price, these have been my concerns with dipping into the Imprint line. I've read a number of times that the masters they use can be rather lackluster, even if they are often blu-ray premieres, and it seems that a number of titles they release end up getting domestic or UK releases not too long after, so my original approach had been just to wait it out.

The Zhang Yimou box set is of course what changed my mind, which I pre-ordered from Deep Discount (it didn't allow my to purchase through JB Hi-Fi, I'm guessing due to the size?).

With that in mind, for those more experienced with the Imprint line so far, what are some of the titles you would consider to be the best buys, in terms of it being more likely to be the best we're going to get of that title for a while, or that has really good exclusive extras? Which titles are least likely to receive domestic releases with better masters? Any guidance would be appreciated.

The essential noir 2 is unlikely to get better versions for the films since most are from Paramount. A nice selection of extras and all have commentaries.

But as discussed already in this thread, The Face Behind The Mask is a real gem and comes in a very solid edition with good A/V and good extras. Maybe Indicator will release it in the UK (since they too regularly deal with Sony), but they wouldn't do a new master. Maybe some different extras. Can't see it being too much of a better release, but probably would be equal.

I've been inordinately busy over the last year, so I'm just now catching up with the fantastic news that Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive (2011) and ardent admirer of one of my favorite "lost" B noirs, Guilty Bystander (1950), tracked down the last known surviving 35mm print, personally financed its restoration, and has made it available in 1080p HD for free on his website. You can view it in all its glory here: https://www.bynwr.com/articles/guilty-bystander-1950

I hope this eventually leads to a blu-ray release.

It might end up in one of Indicator’s noir sets given they did Night Tide with NWR.

No luck with me ordering from JB during the last sale. First my order was confirmed, then canceled saying my cc could not be verified. I talked to my card issuer and they confirmed there were no issues. So I tried to place two more orders and the exact same thing happened. I contacted JB customer service and got a lot of form responses referring me to their FAQ until finally a genuine human being replied. He said there was a problem with verifying my card and did I have any other questions? So I patiently wrote back with, yes, I still had questions, but the only replies were surveys on how their customer service had handled my problem. So I once again used the contact form on their site describing the situation, waited another four days and finally heard back that they would research the issue and respond soon. Now today I got another two automated surveys on how I would rank their customer service.

Nice prices and a few tempting NOIR titles from down under, but JB has so far not impressed me a whole lot.

I'm hoping one day someone might put out the noirish thriller Stark Fear which i watched on the byNWR channel. That film is insane.

Well, do you want a physical book in your hands and on your shelf, or do you just want to read the content? I'm sure the content is identical.

It definitely is the type of book I'd want to own physically for the nice color posters (new to this edition), and layout of the book too. The Kindle version is obviously going to be formatted a little differently, so it won't look as nice, but the text info should be identical as Guns says.
