I think that cardboard packaging can contribute to bronzing. I had seen that theory online somewhere. My bronzed "The Personals" and "Terrorizers" were both in cardboard packaging. I really hope that "That Day on the Beach" is not next because that one was really pricey and rare.
I don't really think there's any correlation - certainly none that's been evidenced. Some releases in cardboard have bronzed, but an equivalent or greater number in plastic cases have as well.

Just found out my UK copy of The Departed has gone bad on me (Goodfellas was another one a couple of years ago).

Amazon's saying they can't do anything after ten years obviously.. Any chance someone here has contact details for Entertainment in Video? Seems their website just redirects to their YT page nowadays..

Another Lionsgate title I don't see on the 1st post is "Hard Rain". The disc was bronzed and froze up multiple times on playback.

I'll add two more LionsGate titles that are covered in white and purple spots: Brothers (2009) and another report for The Relic. Both discs released in 2010.

For those who don't know check your Werner Herzog box sets from Shout Factory. People are reporting playback issues: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...226326&page=22

Mine appear to be first pressings though I didn't purchase the set until very late 2018. I personally have no issues to report.

This thread began as exclusive to Criterion titles.

It should have been kept that way.

Ideally there would be separate lists of discs by individual manufacturers.

Interesting that the non-Criterion issue is viewed as being "intruded upon" by the original focus of the thread.

Not long ago I'd bought several $100's of Criterion. One was a three-disc in a two-disc case. When I requested a three-disc-case, they acknowledged the error, but also wanted a slew of proof-of-purchase type information.

I was shocked at the nickel-and-dime attitude. And that wasn't the first: try requesting a replacement of a broken case, as received, and be prepared for over-reaction.

That is when you get an answer.
I never received any from him over the years. Never.

I suspect that Criterion didn't acknowledge the problem because they weren't aware of it.

It is because of customers having problems with discs that it became known as a problem, only as result of which Criterion became aware.

Why in the world are people responding today to these issues from 2014? Even during the pandemic I'm still getting immediate responses from Criterion and they always follow through with my issues and requests.

So far I found problems in

The lake house
Lady in the water
The Cowboys
Relentless enemies (national geographic)
Million dollar baby
ATL
Superman II
The getaway (1972)

These were purchased on first year of release.
"Lady in the Water" is so bronzed that I consider framing it and hanging it on the wall so I can tell guests that it's a Gold Record I was awarded while a Big Pop Star.

Another -- "Shoot 'Em Up" -- stopped working not long after purchase. Last I tried it, on two different players, it stopped at the menu screen, and wouldn't respond to any interaction.

Others that freeze while playing: "Casablanca" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (Warner), "West Side Story," "Singing in the Rain". And "Ride with the Devil" (Criterion).

"M" (Criterion) isn't "bronzed," but is black, and won't load.

Looks normal no yellowing.
My copy of "Chinatown" was fine, now freezes.

It isn't visibly "bronzed," but it is probable that the cause is the same for both problems.

The result is the same in both instances: defective disc.

It would be more helpful if the different labels weren't merged. It is a jumble. I'm currently focused on Criterion, so none of the information about other labels is useful, and won't be until I can focus on those, one at a time.

. . . . I guess the only way is to watch the whole films, and who knows if they are going to work fine next year, wish I could just send all 4 for replacement just in case, as it seems some of the discs are deteriorating at a slower pace.
The only way to know if there are problems is to play them. But you don't have to watch: just put it in the player and press "Play". Now and then look at it. If it freezes, then the disc is defective.

I've yet to see a disc simply skip.

My comment of "ridiculous" all those years ago was regarding what you mention, that they merged everything into one thread when it should have been kept separate. They also didn't just merge, they deleted a lot of posts.

I was part of that early version of the thread, and one who identified a number of the faulty Criterions. I also agree that it should have been kept label specific, with further threads created if subsequent labels began showing similar issues. Those in charge at the time felt differently (to me it seemed as if they were trying to bury a bad look for Criterion), and no amount of reasoning was going to change that.

you can test them on a PC for sector errors and file hash mismatches, much faster and more accurate than watching

if it;s super bronzed any method works as it won't load into anything and you'll know instantly, if it's a little bit bronzed than PC method is fastest and easily the most accurate

I have to do all the page-turning myself.
